Way I see it, only way alternative rock ever returns to Chicago is somewhere in the 88-92 range, on a noncommercial/college station :)

Kiss 103.5 won't lean Alternative, they're doing very well with their Rhythmic/Urban lean (they're going after B96 and protecting GCI, remember)... XRT plays some alternative rock but is a AAA station

89.1 WONC from North Central College plays lot of the alternative. Although they still target a little older because of the classic rock that they play

Two nieces, two nephews and a next door neighbor in the 22-32 demo give me access to a small Alt Rock focus group. They alternately like and dislike the music that is the staple of the format. Their reactions are not so dissimilar tho those who listen to CHR. Buffalo has no Alt Rock station but relies on the big signal of CFNY 102.1 Toronto, which might be considered "Alt Rock on steroids" because of the size of the market (5 million +), the amount of new music which the station plays coupled with the required Canadian Content required by CRTC Rules and the heritage of the station.

From what I've observed, the demo that Alt Rock targets can be extremely particular about rotations, bands, second and third cuts added from albums, new music and songs (and bands) that listeners, especially P1s, considered "burnt." The best Alt Rock PDs and MDs face a never ending daily challenge, and that's not the half of it. Air personalities are either "great" or "they suck." Then there's the iPod/MP3/download factor. Given the variables and uncertainty (hate to use that word as it's being applied these days, but it works) I can understand why stations, especially in markets where the demo isn't exactly there or worth splitting and coming up short, give up on the format.

You can soon add X103.9 in Phoenix, Az. to the list of alternative casualties. I see no way that the new owners are going to keep the station going as is - if their goal is to do better.
