Q-102 gone 10 years this week

It is hard to believe, isn't it? The sad part is that I remember telling Alan that the Cincinnati station he didn't have the calls for was WUBE. It was also about that time that my ex and I were ending our relationship, and her son starts high school tomorrow when Springfield, MO goes back to school. Between Q-102 going away 10 years ago and knowing my former stepson, who was 4 when I last saw him, is starting high school, I'm starting to feel old!

Q-102 was a beloved Dallas institution, I believe they lost their way when they tried to start competing head to head with KDGE (94.5 at the time). Id love to have the old Q back on the air playing kickass album rock or even new rock.

If we were sitting in, say, 1983, and trying to predict the future of DFW radio, who woulda ever thought that, a quarter-century later, The Zoo and Q-102 would be long gone, and THE EAGLE would still be around!

Or that KVIL, WRR, KSCS, KPLX, K-104, KKDA-AM, KAAM and KRLD would be running their same format and call letters?

The thing I remember most about the zoo was the logo. I do remember the station not the jocks cause hell I was in the what 4th grade at the time. I remember reading an article about when Q102 went down and rebbeard (never a fan of his) refused to go to the station managers office to be fired.

I was there when FM-102 made the switch to Q-102....and the good folks behind the great times are still around: Tim Spencer's in Memphis kicking it....Dave Van Dyke's with ABC....Tempie Lindsey and Doug Saye doing great VO work......all the others--Allen Farmer, Randy, John, Steve, Gary, Cat doing entertainment reports, Pat Donovan of the Cowboys on the pre-game show....>Bud Stiker for setting the tone. All the names I am forgetting to add in here. The switch from the old Airport to Hall at Welborn was part of the great time, too......../Mitch Carr

I really enjoyed listening to Q102 from about 1992 to 1994. Great station with great music.

Their problems started when KZPS started playing classic rock, the Edge took alternative, Z-rock in it's brief apperences took the metal audience, etc...Slowly the audience for those sub-genres suddenly had an alternative- and instead of having to sit through something they didn't like, they had a choice. If you're a classic rocker and didn't like waht Q102 was playing, punch that button (back in the days when they were actual buttons you had to push in) and see what 92.5 was playing...

That's the formula to turn p-1's into p-2's. And while KZPS or the Edge could never beat Q102 head to head, the combination of those 2, along with The eagle, Z-rock, the Arrow, etc when they were around, was enough to kill Q102.

The Arrow!? Stumped me on that one... With respect to all the other "oldies" mentioned in this post, greatness...
