Q-96, Champaign becoming dance friendly again

I have heard Q play a number of dance hits recently. Of course, Madonna's "Hung Up", I'm sure "Sorry" is coming. Cascada's "Everytime We Touch" has been a regular since Jan. 1. DHT is played. Now I'm hearing songs during the 9-5 work day like Fragma's "Miracle", Dee Dee's "The One", Lucas Prata. I know there are others but I just can't recall the names right now. They also are pumping 90's old school jams (dance/hip-hop) over the lunch hour. Friday's at 5 have a dance mix and every Friday and Saturday night from 9pm on is nothing but dance hits. It seemed like every time I jumped in the car this week, a dance hit was playing. Maybe my timing was great but I am sure the new PD, Ken Cunningham, is doing great at bringing balance to this station. He's giving dance a fair shake with hip-hop, rock and pop. They are really creating a nice niche between our HOT AC/Adult CHR Mix 94.5 and Hip-Hop/R&B HOT 105.5. Dance is back in 2006 in the cornfields of Illinois! There's hope dance fans!
 
Champaign isn't the typical small market though now is it? :)
I was there a couple of months ago on my way to Chicago. There are some VERY nice subdivisions and neighborhoods in this town, and in Urbana. The university no doubt plays a large part in this, and I'm sure many of the students are from the Chicago area. That might be part of the reason why Q has an easier time mixing in Dance records into its playlist.

The U of I helps our radio dial's variety I think but the previous PD at Q-96 all but took out all dance except for Friday and Sat. nights. It's been a few years since Q has sounded this good. I was listening again today and heard three dance songs in a row! That's big here. One was a 90's hit and the next two from today. They just keep throwing in dance music in regular rotation over and over. It's not quite dance-leaning yet but I would say dance is almost 25%, hip-hop/pop 50%, rock 25%. It just sounds well balanced right now. I wish they streamed and I wish their signal was stronger than 3,800 watts!!! My car picks it up but not my home or office stereos. Luckily I'm in Champaign at least twice a week for errands and some work stuff. This CHR is becoming very dance friendly again and that hasn't happened around here in several years. To be honest CHRles, I don't know how much impact the U of I has on dance's return to the air. Hip-hop is still huge here with HOT 105.5. Every Illini basketball game is laced with hip-hop songs and one dance song - KernKraft is the anthem, get you on your feet before the game song. I just feel fortunate to live in listening shot of the Q right now. Can't believe I'm hearing stuff that I only used to be able to hear on Energy 98. It's great!
 
we have to take our gains where we can these days, and Q96/Champaign is a great thing. 2006 has been great compared with 2005 for this style of music.
