Q about Car radio antennas

Hi

Are there any laws that dictate the highest length your car radio antenna can be?

Mine is 2m high, must be getting near the longest length allowed?

2 meters (about 6.5 feet) high? Is that from street level or from where your antenna starts? There's a bridge not too far from where I live that has a clearance of 11 feet 2 inches (3.61 meters). Would that be pushing it for you?<P ID="signature">______________

Based on the previous post, I'd say that the maximum height is pretty much self-limiting.

I can't imagine why you would want an antenna too much bigger.

Bigger does not always mean better in an antenna. Give me a resonant antenna any day. At 100 Mhz, the middle of the band, a 1/4 wave whip would be a little longer than 2 feet. I suppose a 5/8 wave might be slightly higher in gain; but, even then, it's not a super-long piece of steel.

You could get exotic and make a colinear or something, but, why? A couple of db here and there is not something you're going to notice very much. But, it'll be a pain to make and maintain, and make your car look -- well -- kinda stupid.

But, length of an antenna is going to be a state/local law issue. While my state and town do not have limits, I can't speak for where you live.

Have fun with it.

My antenna is 2m high from its base! - Gives fantastic reception on FM & really kicks on AM! - New Zealand can be heard at night REAL clear! North Americans give huge hets on 10khz splits.
This on a Pioneer Super tuner 3-D (CD/Mp3 unit).
