Q COUNTRY GONE?

Does anybody think KIRO will respond by putting their Sports on FM and resuming News back on 710AM? Since the News on FM is doing so well, I think that would be suicide.

Personally, I think Bonneville blew it big by not keeping their heritage KIRO News Radio on 710, and putting their Sports broadcast talk and games on the FM.

Anybody think they are eating crow right now?

That whole station ID thing...
The first time I heard one similar was Derek Shannon with one of his stations, so I copied him.

We use "KANY Ocean Shores to Olympia. And "Transmitting from somewhere off the Washington Coast, KLSY South Bend, North Beach, Long Beach... the Quake rocks the coast. KNBQ Centralia to Seattle was good. And legal.

re Bonneville...Kind of easier to armchair quarterback after-the-fact. When they did the FM launch everyone thought they were nuts. Now it's working well. Since KTTH is not my cup of tea ... I always wonder why they didn't put the sports on there and keep the 710 brand and simulcast THAT with the FM. Basically that is same strategy that KOMO is doing. In Bonneville's case I would use the 770 for Sports and 710 for News product ... in Fisher's case I have always been a fan of using the KVI signal for in-depth and specialty news that complements the KOMO product. In both cases most of the sales could be combo's.

The problem with 770 is their night signal is only 5000 watts, with nulls to the NE and South. I remember they used to have occasional Sonics games on there with lots of complaints after dark.

Yeah, it's no turning back for KIRO. What's done is done and the FM news is certainly a success. But KJR 950 and 102.9 is such a pure ad agency buy right now, that CC will probably have a leg up in the sales dept if the client wants to buy a pure sports air-product. I probably wouldn't want to be Sales Manager for the 710 right now.

A long time ago I think there was a FCC rule that you couldn't simulcast all 24 hours in a day. The max was 12 hours. You had to have different programing the rest of the time.

Yes, the FCC used to have such a rule that prohibited simulcasting between stations that overlapped. It was a little more complicated than just 12 hours if I remember correctly; I believe it was half of the AM hours and half of the PM hours. So, a 6 AM to 6 PM simulcast would be legal, but a midnight to noon simulcast would not. That rule, however, went away in the mid-80's. The FCC did, however, implement a rule prohibiting same band simulcasts where more than 50% of the coverage overlaps in '92 after it agreed to permit duopoly.

I'm no big country music fan so I'm not crying about this too much. But with simulcasting, the overall listening options continue to shrink.

The simulcasting prohibition went away because AM was becoming less and less viable. There was the belief that too many people had only AM radios in their vehicles to just give operators an incentive to turn in their AM licenses. So, allowing simulcasting would keep AM stations on-the-air at minimal cost. Of course, we're seeing the same scenario play out roughly 30 years later. The rule prohibiting simulcasting went away largely so AM could still be viable for music programming, and we're seeing that it's now no longer viable for much of any programming!

I'll miss Q-Country. Always thought it must be strange for Kevin being the only DJ there. Hope he lands somewhere else.

We will all miss "Big D and Bubba"... not. Actually, a surprising number of local listeners would argue with me when I told them it was a syndicated show.
there must be a broken hearted big D and bubba fan out there somewhere, huh? the average inept listener can easily fooled by syndicated shows as local. especially with pre recorded local liners, inserted before big D and bubba started their fast paced liner card morning show comedy act. let me guess, it was stereotype "larry the cable guy" style schtick, where big D and bubba played off each other, and one was the straight man.....

losing this Q country station, is like losing the neighborhood mcdonalds. dont worry, there is still a burger king, wendys, and another mcdonalds a few miles down the road......

note: no offense intended towards larry the cable guy. he is 100% hilarious!

My fave LARRY bit was when he appeared on Celebrity Family Feud and was asked to introduce his family. Turns to the next person and starts a heavy make-out session ... comes up for air and introduces "his sister". (Was actually his wife...but a funny bit).

They may have fixed it by now, but it was interesting a couple of days ago on the RDS scroll, with identification of country songs, interspersed with "KJR FM". I guess it's okay to use false call letters on RDS, but I was trying to correlate the country songs with the sportscast.

Actually, I wouldn't mind if they'd display a whole bunch of random song titles on the RDS. If only my IPod would read the RDS! QCountry and Gen X were two of my biggest music providers. Between those two, KUBE, and KJR-FM, they were my 5 biggest music providers. Now if I want to tag any song I like I have to do it from CBS, and I've only gotten like 2 songs to actually connect to ITunes off of the 3 CBS stations.

KJR's Simulcast on 102.9 isnt the only AM/FM Simulcast that uses one set of Call Letters on the FM during the Hour. but have a different set of call Letters as the Legal ID.

WBBM 780 in Chicago. the WBBM-FM Call Letters are on 96.3 FM in Chicago. but the WBBM Simulcast is on 105.9 which has the call Letters WCFS

Where do you live?

If you are within the sound of our voice, listen to Bigfoot 93.7 KANY tomorrow morning at 6 am. And no, we don't stream.

We're just doing what the listeners have asked for... is that a terrible concept?
