Q

I know they are different formats, but shouldn't WIOQ (aka "Q102") be a little concerned about another station, WWIQ (aka "IQ106.9") identifying themselves as such? I mean, the name is awfully close. I know I would not be happy. ???

Since they appeal to entirely different audiences, it should not be a problem. Still, it is a little too close for comfort.

Also, radio stations in Philly don't get ratings by people writing the call letters down on paper anymore. So, stations no longer care if the listeners know the call letters, unless they're using the call letters to get people to remember to tune in. Q-102 only says "WIOQ" on the air once an hour in hushed tones.

Yeah, as said now that the diary system is gone, Q102 doesn't really care about their calls. In the old days they probably would've protested out of fear people might write wwiq instead.

Only stations who use their calls as part of their identity would care now. WIP would protest WWIP for example, or KYW with WKIW (especially since some of the anchors with strong Philly accent sound like they're saying KIW already)

all that said, if WIOQ calls itself "Q-102" on the air and the other station is "IQ-106.9", isn't that a little unsettling for both stations?

WWIP is a contemporary christian non-commercial station down at the southern tip of Delmarva serving Hampton Roads...

I always thought the strong Philly accent made "KYW" sound more like "kay - wha - double - yew"...

Time for the annual "Kay Wor Deh Bee" Beth Trapani memorial post. ;D And diary or PPM, WIOQ has nothing to worry about.

Right you are. The chance of Q-102 talking about anything of substance is near zero. No confusion there.

Plus it's a completely different demo for that howling racket. On 102 I mean. :D

(says I who last tuned to 102.1 when it signed off as an album rocker in 1987.)
