Q100 continues metamorphosis to AC format

***News Alert***

In today's 6 p.m. hour "All the Hits" Q100 played "Just Like a Pill," by Pink, a song that is over 7 years old and a full-blown favorite of AC stations nation-wide.

B half-a-sleep.5 noted, "We are looking forward to the challenge of another Adult Contemporary station. Since Peach left in 2006 we haven't had much competition; Q100 fills that hole nicely. We heard they will be adding Barbara Streisand, Tony Orlando & Dawn and Bread soon. We wish them well."

Fallin' Star had no comment as they are still in shock that they are, by default, the hottest station in the market.

I've heard/watched a lot of ACs and never seen them play that song. Only P!nk song I have heard on mainstream AC (70s-current based) is "Who Knew" and occasionally "Get The Party Started." Some may be playing "Please Don't Leave Me" now or soon, however.

Yeah. There are still a few things separating Q100 from being a full-blown CHR musically, but that song isn't necessarily one of them. Star 94 plays it as well.

Seems more to me like they are going in a Hot AC/Adult Top 40 direction. When you start hearing Bee Gees, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Billy Joel, Genesis/Phil Collins, Lionel Richie, et al they have gone AC.

Wouldn't surprise me, however, if they transition to 80s/90s/now then transition in to AC (including artists listed above) after that.

Imagine if Q did go that direction... it would then open the door for a REAL top 40 station possibility there!!!

But if they do go that way, Star would be a much better name for them to adapt for that type of format, and then Star*94 should give up their name because it's so weak, especially if Star*94 ever decided to shift to a more traditional top 40.

it could be worse and they could be trying to go more hip-hop like many CHR/Top 40's are, when they worry too much about the teens. At least they know who their auduence is. There will always be good ratings for a station appealing to upscale women 21-44 in Atlanta.

I would say the hip hop generation has now become the parents. The next generation of kids filling in for the generation that have now become the parents, they are entering into a pop / electro-pop / electro-hip hop generation and sound.

The alternative / rock sound was even before all that, so despite the fact I wouldn't mind having a top 40 like Star and Q where I live, I still say it's sort of "old fashioned" for a top 40 sound today.

I say I wouldn't mind it, but of course - I'm biased because I grew up with that sound in the 90's. To be more specific, Star*94 was the only option I had growing up, so yes, part of the desire for that sound has stuck with me, although back then I was dying to have stations like the ones we have where I'm living now.

Cumulus has rolled out a number of new CHR/Pop stations this summer. Starting with I-94 in Indianapolis, followed by I-106 here in Nashville. Well today Dallas got added to the list with I-93.
All 3 of these CHRs are more Rhythmic friendly than Q-100 and you gotta wonder why this music mix isn't being implemented on their Atlanta CHR. The I stations are much of what a real Top 40 sounds like. They don't shy away from records by the likes of Drake.

So that's his middle name: Rob Drake Thomas.
