Q100: Post Cumulus Checkup

OK, what do we think of Q100 now several months into Cumulus' ownership? Just a few quick examples, I think their use of positioning (using ten-in-a-row and coupleing it w/promoting Bert Show) is very clearly focused. It's better communicated than talking about how your signal is now bigger and more powerful, or contests that are confusing by have listeners quess for days on end the sound created by common household objects, contests that did nothing to reinforece the position of the station.

And the new night guy (as much as I was a fan of Geller) works great in the tighter format. Ditto for TSJ and Dylan. I see Q100 continue to trend upwards.

I wish only great things for Q, but Cumulus has a questionable track record. I hope the new format works to their advantage in the long run. Too bad the "bigger, better more powerful signal" is only 30,000 watts. 99X has 100,000. Still, I think they have enough talent to triumph. I hope it shows in the ratings.

Why do people think - "bigger signal should equal bigger ratings". Let's look at the last book:

WSRV 98kW, WHTA 27kW, WSTR 100kW, WLTM 100kW, WWVA 20kW, WSB-FM 100kW, WKLS 100kW, WBTS 74kW, WJZZ 21.5kW and WWWQ 12.5kW (FFC FM Query page Licensed for only 12.5k) were all beaten in the ratings by a station with a 7.9k signal, WPZE!

Maybe it is because they provide the content and not the contest that people want to hear.

You may be on to something.

Or, it could be that 7.9kw is enough to hit PZE's demo.

Back in the late 50's/early 60's. WSB/750 was, of course, #1 in the ratings. WAKE/1340 was a close second.

Just HAD to be its signal (with its massive groundwave). Right.

I liked Q100 the way it was, Cumulis uses 10-in-a-row WAY too much and I can't stand it! Why did they feel the need to change it?!
