Q100 snubbing some of the highest charting songs?????

I mean what's up with that? I've been behind Q100 since day one. It also plays 24/7 on my living room stereo for background noise when I'm not home...not to mention all day at work! But after listening a little to Star-94 and checking out Radio & Records, I am all too curious as to why Q either takes SO LONG to play a new song or mostly they don't play the song at all! I have compiled a list of songs that are not only gaining fast on the airplay charts but they're songs being played on every other Top-40 station except Q100.........

METRO STATION "Shake It" -- This one baffles me the most because it's #3 in the nation! Not to mention, it's #1 (Airplay) on many, many local staions! But I have yet to hear it ONCE on Q-100! ??? WHY?

Other songs that Q-100 (as a "full blown Top-40") are NOT playing include:

MIA - "Paper Planes"
ONE BLOCK RADIUS - "You Got Me"
WE THE KINGS - "Check Yes Juliet"
SEPTEMBER - "Cry For You"
PUSSYCAT DOLLS - "When I Grow Up" (seriously! NOT heard on Q100)!
SECONDHAND SERENADE - "Fall For You"
BOYS LIKE GIRLS - "Thunder"
MILEY CYRUS - "7 Things"

.....and the REALLY scary thing is that 4 of those songs are played royally in AUGUSTA!! (WHHD 98.3)

But ALL of them.....NOT on Q100!

So, my question is, Why say "ALL THE HITS Q100" when they don't play ALL the hits?

Thanks for letting me rant! ;D

Any thoughts?

My daughter says you can hear at least two of them on Radio Disney.

Maybe the tested those songs on a local focus group and they scored badly.

Maybe they tested those songs on the PD's wife, and she didn't like them.

Maybe the record labels didn't grease the right wheels.

Use your imagination.

Electroboy..lets check out this thing further.

After looking at your post, then Mediabase 24/7(the actual spin chart) I notice these discrepincies

of the top 15 songs in the country Q100 Plays 14 Star 94 11. Yes its baffles why Q doesn't play metro station. But the song is about done(meaning the spins are about to plateau), at Number 4 right now, It's even more strange why Star is not playing Kardinall Offishall's Dangerous, Neyo's Closer, Rihanna's Disturbia and The ***** Cat Dolls(which Q is playing) One could say they don't play Churban leaning music as much. Well then their not "Atlanta's Number 1 Hit Music Station" If you look at the remaining songs you cited Q doens't play, the only one that looks to be a hit(again im base ing this off of their chart postion) is Second Hand Serenade. I agree with you on that. 7 things is dead, Boys Like Girls is stalling and the others are either stagnet on the chart or haven't charted yet. Augusta is a differnet market than Atlanta. All songs don't work in all places as you already know. Each station seems to lean one way. That might be a reason

One thing I've noticed is the two different approaches to CHR that Q100 and Star 94 are taking. It seems like Q100 is taking a more yuppy-fied approach to this format with their cutesy imaging, cleaner processing, and cleaning out the emo from the lineup. Star 94 seems to be turning into the emo station, maybe because most of their listeners have kids who Star thinks likes that really crashy sound.

Every city CHR has some slight variation of approach to how they run CHR, and this refers to their imaging and their processing as well as their music.

Q100's approach to CHR is the norm for Cumulus CHR stations in this region. Check out 104.3 WZYP/Huntsville and 101.9 WHHY/Montgomery for a comparison. Over time, the mix, the imaging, and the processing is consistently similar among all 3 stations.

As a personal opinion, for what it's worth: This summer has yielded a ton of "disposable music" on the CHR format. If I were programming a CHR station I doubt that I would want to lose my rear over some song that has about 5 minutes of chart life. Q100 is finally in a good head-to-head competition with Star 94 so a tight playlist is key for the station that wants to win.

Or looking at it another way, if ALL the stations played ALL the same songs I bet you would complain about THAT.

Maybe the record labels have figured out that going after the tweener (6-12) market is profitable--old enough to get Mom or Dad to buy CDs (or buy them with their allowance) but too young to try and download it over P2P...hence all the Radio Disney acts on the charts that many CHR stations won't touch lest they lose their cred.

Radio Disney has had a massive impact on records sales (and the national chart as sales influence CHR adds) over the past 10 years - Radio Disney is also doing the most creative radio programming of any stations out there and has been for years. They know their audience and they know how to creatively program to them. (Although I hate to say that this started with Radio Ahhs 15 years ago and Disney basically put them out of business)

As a student of radio, I am constantly impressed with the quality and consistency of what they do and constantly listen to them when I need to be reminded that there is still great radio programming out there.

Folks, broaden your scope. Many of the songs listed you could make an argument for or against. "Shake It" by Metro Station is succeeding without Q100 airplay, right? Okay, no big deal, just one station.

Look further. It's succeeding without WZYP airplay, either. Or KRBE in Houston. Or WAOA in Melbourne, Fl.

All Cumulus Broadcasting stations.

All who, by the way, ARE playing David Cook's "Time of My Life" and O.A.R.'s "Shattered."

Not saying t hose songs aren't worth consideration... but none are bigger than "Shake It."

Folks rail on Clear Channel for cookie-cutter playlists, but this is a clear case where a company has decided (for all their CHRs) that a song won't work for their individual markets.

It's a testament to one or more of three things...

1. How strong "Shake It" really IS, nationally, without any Cumulus spins

2. How wrong whoEVER made the call on that song is, and has been, all along.

3. Somebody's mad at Columbia. Did Columbia work with a major market competitor on a big promotion or something, and tick off a decision-maker?

Makes one wonder how many Columbia tunes WZYP, KRBE or WAOA are playing. One thing is for sure. Rob Roberts isn't in a position to hold them off Cumulus stations nationwide, which narrows the answer to the OP's question even more.

I'll put this out there as food for thought: Star bought the Atlanta tour stop of John Mayer/ One Republic for Starfest. What label is John Mayer on? Hmmmmm.

Here's a list of the reporting Cumulus CHR stations on Mediabase.

WWWQ Atlanta
KRBE Houston

KBEA Quad Cities
KMCK Fayetteville, AR
KQXY Beaumont, TX
WAOA Melbourne
WHHY Montgomery, AL
WHOT Youngstown, OH
WQSM Fayetteville, NC
WTWR Toledo
WWCK Flint, MI
WWKL Harrisburg
WZYP Huntsville

A quick glance definitely says that the statement above about Cumulus ignoring this song is definitely true. Does anyone know for a fact this song is researching in the 25+ demo though? These stations could all target that upper demo which this song may not do well with. WZYP and KBEA are both playing it 6-7 times a week but they are the only ones. Everyone else has that 1 countdown spin.

Q100 definitely seems to stay away from anything that is a hardcore rap that is in the Top 40.
It may be strictly the PD's preference.

They played Miley Cyrus' "See You Again" to death. So I don't know why they wouldn't touch "7 Things" too.

And they played Rob Thomas' "Seven Wonders" all the time and that song barely cracked the Top 40.

Sounds like All the Hits may be geared for 30-50 year olds who listen to The Bert Show.
