Q100 upgrading signal at 5:15 p.m. Friday

Q100's Dylan Sprague just announced on air that the FCC has given the station clearance to go from half to full power on Friday at 5:15 p.m., giving the station a fairly even playing field in most of metro Atlanta to Star 94.

Does anyone here think Star 94 will react at all? What might they do? Maybe stop editing "American Top 40," "Rick Dees Weekly Top 40" and all the R&B-leaning songs they dare play?

I really think that if Q-100 starts blowing sky high on their new signal, it will force Star or 95-5 the Beat to go mainstream.

Has anyone noticed that Star 94 is having a Halloween singles party? How often does this family-oriented station (except at night) do a singles event? Are they reacting to Q100's JackQLantern, or is it a just a coincidence?

I'd like to think that maybe they're feeling the heat from Q and have realized that they can't win this battle on signal alone anymore.

That's a losing battle for Star ... they might as well offically surge to Hot AC.

I hope in addition to the stronger singal Q100 tweaks their audio processing.

meaning they'd have to either offically change to hot ac or flip offically to CHR. If they do the later, the jocks won't mesh well with the music...so they'd have to go...so they couldn't bank on the heritage of Steve and Vicki (BTW, nice tv spot...for an AC or country station). Then they'd blow the jocks out...starting all over...meaning Q wins.

If Q wins, how will this effect Star?

As long as Star stays the biggest money maker in the CHR battle over Q and Beat then they are not modifying format. Even with two main stations trying to take them down Star is still the most successful hit music station in town. Maybe not in every demo and maybe a ratings book here and there but Star is the highest billing of the 3 and will continue to be and the revenue brought in matters more in the long run.

I think youse guys are missing one major point: Joe/Jane listener
have no idea who's CHR...who's hot AC...whatever. You don't consider
STAR a CHR? Great. No listener cares...and it HAS been working for
them, huh? As for the previous poster who seems to think STAR is
relying on "signal" in their battle with Q...surely you can't be serious.
(insert classic line from "Airplane" here)

Wow. You've already got Star changing its format, firing its jocks and "starting all over." And Q hasn't even flipped the switch yet.

I'll tell you when I pass you in the hall on Saturday.

Fairly even playing field? Q100's full power will be 12.5 KW compared to STAR's 100KW, WBTS's 100KW, V103's 100KW, etc.....

Why won’t Q adjust their music to better fit the new listeners? Star already covers a lot more area, and still will. I'm not sure why Q's power increase means Star will star have to adjust their music. They might. If I remember correctly FMFreq said that Q beat Star in 18-34, that's a pretty narrow demo. If you've already got that locked up shouldn’t you figure out how to get 18-44 or 18-49 or more? I'm sure if you look at men who have trucks that are 45-50 and don't like country music, 96rock is #1 for that demo.

Q100 will have a very competitive signal where the great majority of the population lives. But yes, those other stations will still get out farther.

The Beat's power is actually 74,000 watts, but look how far out the transmitter is. The Beat's signal is not the best in many places inside the Perimeter. But that will change now that the COL is Doraville.

I personally don't care for either station, but I know results when I see them. Star has a proven performance record, year after year. Compare that with what Q100 has accomplished: Not much, except for a handful of people on this board who constantly make excuses for its consistent pattern of failure. It's almost laughable to hear people speculate about Star flipping format. Love 'em or hate 'em, Star owns that audience. Love 'em or hate 'em, Q100 owns nothing. And repeatedly saying otherwise, doesn't make it so.

I don't see WSTR panicking at this point. They'll continue as if nothing happened.

The same thing with Cox, who seems to be pleased with WBTS' Rhythmic direction, so this move from Q100 won't affect 95.5 The Beat in way shape or form.

12.5KW is what they broadcast at a certain height. Star has the eqivalent of 100KW at a certain height - Q will be equal to 50KW at their tower height on top of the Westin. Sure Star has more power, but now Q will be able to cover almost the entire metro. They have just as much power as most other Top 40's in major markets.

Rodney's original statement was correct - they playing field is fairly even now.

I agree. After all, 95.5 went rhythmic just days after Q100 debuted.

I noticed they were tweaking the audio on Monday morning during the TSG time slot after that huge outage they had from after midnight Monday to around sunrise on Monday. What was that outage all about? On Friday are they just going to flip a switch at 5:15?
