Q101.9- The Variety Station

Hmm... I was listening online to Q, and it seems that their playlist feels more mellow ... in a good way. The station seems less Hot AC, and more Easy Listening/Soft AC with a mix of Rhythmic AC. Not bad for a format tweak.

I noticed a tweak too. I got an HD Radio Walkman for Christmas (sucks the volume can't go higher than 15 on it) and I hooked it up to my DVD Recorder now I have airchecks of 94.1, 96.1, 101.9 HD1 @ HD2 Smooth Jazz, and X-1067 about 30 minutes of each.

It sounds like they are reviving KTFMs format without the hip hop friendly songs. I think it is just AC evolving since we are heading into 2011.

AC stations have done this in 2001, and 1991. As you remember Star 93 that type of AC they played wasn't heard of in San Antonio, even KMIXs playlist matched KQXT more than KSRR.

From Allaccess:

"We have assembled some of the best AC talent in the country," CLEAR CHANNEL/SAN ANTONIO OM TONY TRAVATTO told ALL ACCESS. "BRONSON & CHRISTINE from WLTW/NYC, JENNIE JAMES, VICTOR ZARAGOZA and MELANIE ASADOOR. We found that there was a lot of music that is loved in SAN ANTONIO that is not being played in the market. You will hear songs that SAN ANTONIO loves, custom to SAN ANTONIO tastes, including anything from KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND to LIFEHOUSE to MICHAEL JACKSON and MADONNA."

I am curious what songs Q is playing that Magic or KONO isn't playing.....

I think this market has always lacked hot/modern ac. I actually liked 94.1 two summers ago when they went hot ac because they were playing lots of songs that u wouldn't hear on magic, 101.9, or 96. For example, daughtry's "no surprise" song and Michael buble, and rob Thomas "her diamonds". All these were played way before magic or anyone else touched them. It something san Antonio always lacked and it's too bad they flipped back to top 40 like I predicted they would. I wish magic would retool to the newer hot ac music like almost every other market has. I think even 96.5 in corpus plays new hot ac. Why this markets music continues to be stale and older is beyond me. Just like never having an alt rock station here as well.

Let it be known that Landis(KTFM) made numerous attempts to try and make the Hot AC format successful in SA but the format never took off. As KTFM added more Top 40 tracks to the format the numbers were steadily increasing thus giving way to what KTFM is today. It was a business decision to flip KTFM back to it's roots.

And btw, Alternative Rock stations have been struggling to stay afloat over the last couple of years similar to the Hip Hop format.
