Q102.7 Terre Haute

Anyone know what is up with Q 102.7 in Terre Haute? Usually the 50kW signal comes into Putnam county just fine. Haven't picked it up all week, and a buddy that lives on the east side of Terre Haute says it's barely audible there.

Is the station still under an LMA or has the sale to Midwest closed? Either way, it's probably a bad sign for a new format to be off a week during it's first ratings book.

They took a lightning hit early last week. Transmitter was running micro power. I believe that it has been repaired and back at full power since early Monday morning.

Based on the coverage, I would guess they had a 250 watt backup xmitter. Wasn't strong enough to stop on a scan on the east side Walmart in my car.

102.7 does NOT have any back up transmitter! they were running off the exicter.

In fact Midwest does not have ANY back up transmitters at any of the Terre Jaute stations.

AND about 6 weeks ago they fired the chief engineer (very competent) so they have no local engineer.

I have never been impressed with Midwest Communications. When they first entered the market, their track record with their stations in Wisconsin would indicate that they would be good operators. Maybe Terre Haute is just to far away for Duke Wright to keep an eye on his operation. They really haven't done anything that well except launch a pretty good FM news/talk format.

-They have never been able to make anything on 95.9 work. A major lack of presence with this station, but it is hard to be visible when the lineup is all out of market voicetrackers.

-Air "talent" on WMGI is at an all-time low. How did they let so many good jocks get away? Is the PD really that impossible to work with? Mornings, Middays, and afternoons are just brutal to listen to. No real content or interaction during middays and afternoons is sad, as WMGI at one time (early 2000's) did the work day better than anyone else.

-The launch of Q102.7 was difficult because of the LMA, and while I like some of what they have done, at the end of the day, Midwest has made it mostly a voicetracked jukebox after Party Marty's live AM show.

-As stated above, I will give them credit for WIBQ. This area so badly needed the FM talk format, and the addition of Frank Rush has been superb.

I can't believe any company would operate a 6-station cluster without an engineer. No wonder it took a week to fix 102.7 after the storm last week.

Midwest lost the tower site for 1300! At the present time it is operating on a type of long wire antenna without a ground system at the 100.7 WMGI tower. Now a bad signal. The WMGI site is a junk pile also with no back up facilities or generator. Midwest Terre Haute appears to be a cheap operation.

Considering that Terre Haute is a two operator market now, Midwest is probably the inferior of the two. But still light-years ahead of Crossroads.

Midwest is cheap. None of the transmitter sites have any back up equipment or standy generators. I look for 1300 never to be put back on a vertical tower in the future, Probably will turn in the license soon.
