I know the answers will be name recoginition and saving money...I'll ask anyway...Why does Q102 and so many other CHRS carry Ryan Seacrest...The show is so annoying and boring...Every radio rule is broken...don't stop the music no break is that important ...the these CHRs get Seacrest who does less than entertaining breaks that leave me scratching my head....I know its the way of the business but sometimes local is sooo much better..

WHy ask a question when you know the answer? :D OK, a part of the answer. If you're not in the target audience, it doesn't matter in the least if you find it annoying or boring. As for rules, that's a crock. The dinosaur rules aren't important--what's important is whether or not enough people tune in to make it profitable. If not, it will fade away--and thus, problem solved.

Elvis Duran, Ryan Seacrest, Delilah, Kid Kraddick, they all represent stations wanting to be cheap and not local. Another manifestation of cost cutting is Magic 100.1. That whole station only exists because Greater Media is cheap. Mornings and middays are simulcasted from 50 miles away.

Can't afford a morning show? Elvis Duran or Kid Kraddick's there. Too cheap for a midday chick? Get Ryan Seacrest! Want to annoy half the listeners to your AC station at night? Delilah is the answer.

I can't stand that god-awful Ryan Seacrest. If I wanted to hear Hollywood gossip every song I would watch E! or read TMZ.com. Elvis Duran is not as good now as it was 5 years ago when it was only on Z100. I never liked Delilah. I seem to hear Kid Kraddick on many stations I DX via e-skip so he's on a lot of small market stations.

At least Magic is simulcasted from a station that is still local to where Magic is at.

Seriously... was it really worth quoting that entire post especially since it was the last one on the thread, only to add one line of comment? Too much clutter, just my opinion...

Anyway, as far as the topic at hand... A major market afternoon host on a station like Q102, especially if the morning show is emanating from another market, at the very least ought to be local. Yes, it's just music, but even in today's "cut and cookie cut" radio business, some sort of local representation should be mandated.

WJRZ's coverage isn't local to WMGQ's....both cover different parts of the state with very different makeups. Ocean County & Middlesex/Somerset/Union don't have too much in common.

This may not be an issue for much longer. Tom Taylor in his newsletter this morning mentioned that Seacrest's deal to do mornings at KIIS/LA runs out in November. Much of the content for his tracked midday show comes from KIIS, so if he goes, the national show will as well. I would think it would also mean the end of his run as host of American Top 40, since CC-owned Premiere Radio Networks distributes that program.

The rumor is he may bolt the Clear Channel empire for CBS, with the centerpiece being a daytime TV talk show to essentially replace Oprah. There could also be a radio component, where he could eventually shift to KAMP in LA and base a radio syndication deal out of there. And even though he just signed an extension to remain the host of American Idol, I could easily see him figuring out a way to jump ship to Simon Cowell's new show X-Factor in Fall of 2011. In any event, it's possible that Seacrest's radio exposure will be diminished starting next year.

I wonder if this means the new TV show will basically be simulcast on the radio - kinda like what "Late Show with David Letterman" used to do in selected major markets about ten years ago.
