Q102 music observation

nd2023

Banned
For the past 3 days in a row I heard Justin Timberlake - Lovestoned played on Q102. That song is a gold I hadn't heard in a while till this week on Q102. I've also heard other golds like N Sync - Tearin Up My Heart, Destinys Child - Jumpin Jumpin, Rockell - In A Dream, Britney Spears - Toxic this past week. I don't hear so many golds on other CHR stations.

I wouldn't mind a CHR station that only plays recurrents and golds, it'll be #1 for yesterday's hit music

Rockell In A Dream has been a staple on Q since it was released. Q was probably the first station to play the song. There is nothing wrong with a CHR playing Recurrent and gold records. It might be what they are finding in their research that the listeners want this or it could also be that they do not want to burn records out too fast. Plus its summer time and people are cranking their radios looking for the songs that they want to sing a long too.

Hmmm, I wonder if someone in the market will launch a Gen X (90s hits and more) type of station in the coming months.

I'm not complaining about the golds on Q102, in fact I love hearing them! I just notice that they're playing a lot more golds than other CHRs.
Playing more golds sure beats spinning the powers 140x a week.

SiriusXM has a decade station for the 00s. They call it "Pop2k." It plays CHR hits from the past decade.

A format like that would be something good for Q102's HD subchannel.

Funny you mention this, I've noticed the same exact thing. Also, in nearby Harrisburg, CHR WHKF has recently added several golds and recurrents back into the mix. I wonder if the is a CC CHR thing? Harrisburg did have a gen-ex format sign on in the Spring, it could also be a reaction to that.

I would find it odd if Q102, which is doing fine on their own, would proactively add more 90s gold to preempt a possible gen-ex format, especially considering the most likely contender is CC's own My 106.1.

This has crept up here and there in different markets. My conclusion has been that as CHR as a whole moves in more of a rhythmic direction stations are using golds as more of a distinguisher from rhythmic CHRs, in Philly's case, Wired 96.5.
