Q102 - WIOQ

I thought they were a great radio station in the 80's.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=y24rSIE0WvQ

What was the line-up in each day part? Harvey, Leicht, Schiaky, Dye, Tozzi, Varleta ??? Is this correct? who did overnights? who did weekends? any sites about this station? Thanks.

I think by the '80s they had morphed into a softer, less diversified and in my opinion not as good, rock station. They were at their peak in the late 70's. Nobody could touch them. Clearly the widest, most eclectic and best mix on FM. If I recall, somewhere around '78 or '79 they even beat MMR and YSP in the ratings. They played everything and seemed to specialize in breaking new artists. Their cream of the crop line-up was something like this I think-

6-10 a.m. - JOHN HARVEY (Harvey In The Morning). Fabulous morning radio. If only we had it today.
10 a.m.-2 p.m. - ALEX DEMERS
2-6 p.m. - JIM HARLAN
6-10 p.m. - ED SCIAKY
10 p.m.-2 a.m. - PHIL BRADY
2-6 a.m. - MICHAEL TOZZI
Weekends - HELEN LEICHT, GENE SHAY, MICHAEL SCHLESINGER

This station was also an early home for Bubba The Love Sponge.

A little sidenote on this. In 2001, while still in Tampa, Bubba vowed never to work in this market again, because the women here are too conservative, and he had the hardest time getting women (I guess the Pat Burrell 'tell your date/boyfriend/husband you'll be coming home with me' approach didn't work for him). Infact, he stated he might refuse this market his show (back when he was in syndication, and was thinking he was the next Stern) if a Philly station wanted to ever pick it up. Just something I remember from my time in Tampa.

I listened to WIOQ almost exclusively from 1975-1987 and don't recall Bubba the Love Sponge being on this station. What year(s) was her here?

Bubba was not part of the Progressive Rock version of Q102, he arrived after they flipped from Oldies to the CHR version of WIOQ that we have today...about 1989.

Did anyone catch David Dye on WMMR yesterday? I'm surprised there's been no mention of WMMR's 40th Anniversary Alumni Weekend here. Ed Sciaky Tribute tonight from 6p-7p.

Scroll down the subject lines and you'll see my post about the reunion. I must say, it is not what I expected it to be.

From memory, with a little help from Michael Tozzi at WJJZ:

1975-1980 The Golden Years at Q102

6A-10A

Jim Harlan through 1977
Harvey from 1977-1985

10A-2A

Alex DeMers and Helen Leitch split the shift for a year or two. Alex the first two hours and Helen the second two. Then Helen took all four hours over permanently

2P-6P

Not sure who was there before Sciacky, but he took that shift around 1978

6P-10P

Ed Sciacky 1977-78 then David Dye came over from WMMR

10P-2A

Not sure about 75-77

Phil Brady 1977-79

Michael Tearson-1979

Tozzi seems to remember a guy named Tony Rainbow.

2A-6A

Michael Tozzi

This is accurate to the best of my 51 year old memory. My apologies for any inaccuracies. I will always cherish the Q102 sounder file, on my desktop as we speak.

In around 1975-76, it was Jim Harlan mornings, Bill Fantini doing the middays, Alex Demers handling afternoon drive, Harvey at night, and a fellow named Bill Paul doing overnights. Rod Carson was doing weekends and fill-ins as I recall.

THAT'S IT!!! Thanks for clearing that up. I had completely forgotten about Bill Fantini and Bill Paul.

Oh WOW!! I think I remember that sound from way back when. Where did you find that?

Perhaps it didn't work for Bubba, but I knew a woman whose good friend did take Pat Burrell up on his, um, offer(?). From the story as told, it seems Pat plays with a little league bat. (God's honest truth, that was what was said.)

Go to www.xpn.org On the homepage, on the left hand side at the top, you will see a pair of headphones which will allow you to listen live by clicking on them. Directly below that is a pull down menu labeled "shortcuts". Click on that and go down the pull down menu to 885 moments. This will direct you to a new page. There is a box with options for moments left by hosts, staff and listeners. Click on hosts. This will take you to another page for hosts favorite moments. Go to and click on Helen Leichts most memorable moments. You will again be redirected to a page with her memorable moments. There is an MP3 icon in her paragraph, which when you click on it, plays the old Q sounder. You will have to figure out a way to capture the streaming audio. If you can, do what I did. Stream the audio from one computer to another by using a stereo cable with mini-jacks to bridge the out of one sound card to the in of the other sound card, and capture the audio with a program designed to record streaming audio. Good luck and Happy Listening.

Oh wow, thanks!
I think I was about 8 years old at the time, but I still remember that. I grew up with Q102 playing in the house. By the time I got older, Q102 had flipped to CHR from oldies and I was into it all over again. Memories!
