Q104 going after 'RXP?

Today, Q104 played the Beastie Boys' "Fight for Your Right". 10 years ago, it would be absolute ludicrous for a "classic rock" station to play that song. IMHO, it still is. I know, Kerry King from Slayer played the guitar on that song, but the Q (and even most hard active rock stations) would NEVER play Slayer, aside from a metal show (Eddie Trunk in Q's case). It also seems as if they are slowly expanding their '90's library, perhaps in an attempt to get 'RXP to flip.

Isn't is natural that as the years go by, newer (or less old) songs would be added? Even if WRXP didn't exist, it seems inevitable that songs which are more recent than 20 years old would be gradually included in the playlist.

Beastie Boys is considered "alternative". Hell, I think even the old WDRE played them on a regular basis!

Q104 will occasionally throw listeners a curveball. I've written on here in the past about hearing them break out Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," and one time, I even heard them play Aretha Franklin's "Respect."

Great conspiracy theory, FFSB. Push WRXP into going into another direction, leaving the rock field all to themselves. To paraphrase the Beastie Boys, that's crafty. :)

Have to agree - that song *is* classic rock. It's older than "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" was when the format was created.

The Beasties are from New York, which may be part of the reason that Q104.3 would play it. I don't think that WZLX in Boston would even touch the Beastie Boys. Q104.3 also is not very heavy with what I call "mustache rock" (think Bob Seger, the Eagles, Steve Miller Band) but plays more of the progressive/alternative sort of fare like U2 and Bowie. I think they're the only station aside from Sirius/XM's First Wave that plays the Monroes' "What Do All the People Know" on a regular basis.

There's regional differences in classic rock stations- on average, stations in rural areas tend to have deeper playlists, southern CR stations tend to play a lot of the so-called "mustache rock" and southern rock, western ones tend to play harder rock, while those in cities like NY, Boston, and San Francisco are more likely to play stuff like the Beatles, U2, Elton John, more of the older and softer sides of the classic rock spectrum. Again, there are always exceptions but it's likely to draw these conclusions from examining playlists for stations in different areas.

Since somebody brought up Boston, I remember then AOR-formatted WBCN playing said Beastie Boys song in heavy rotation when it came out. They also were the first station in the USA to break U2, etc. So Q104 is going in that same direction BCN went years ago..

So how would you classify WBAB on Long Island?

WBAB is more of a mainstream rock station, since they have been playing a small amount of 90s/00s stuff along with the "classics" for a number of years. Same thing with I-95 of CT and WPDH of Poughkeepsie.
