Q104 playing all Michael Jackson music

It will interesting to hear, not only in C-Town but around the country, how many voice-tracked stations will go to through the trouble to override their pre-programmed music & liners to pay tribute to MJ.

It will be more interesting to find out those stations who do occasionally play Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 tunes yet won't do anything until the live morning shows the next day.

Kudos to those in charge at the Q!!! At least there are still one or two stations left in the country that can still make smart decisions (occasionally).

Cool. Will you mention the $20+ million dollar settlements paid to the multiple kids who talked about Mikey's 'pinto' weenie?

Funny what people forget when someone dies. Except for Elvis, of course.

Yes, as I said before KUDOS to Q-104 for their effort in changing the programming to reflect current situations.

I was leafing through some of the Radio-Info Regional boards re: MJ, and one person hit the nail on the head when he discussed the sorry state of radio today -- to paraphrase:

It takes the death of a nationally-known musician for a radio station/group to "break into" canned or syndicated programming (including tape-delayed syndie shows)...

...Yet when there is local pertinent news breaking (especially time-sensitive weather or traffic bulletins) that is more important to specific local populations then the death of a worldwide celebrity, stations will still tend to "proceed as (ab)normal".

Too bad the FCC isn't serious anymore about revoking stations' licenses for blatant exhibitions of NOT serving in the public interest.

I'll be most ecstatic when I hear of the death of Clear Channel Communications (hopefully within the next year) -- of course, no station would DARE to break in with that newsflash!!!

For the record, both Clear Channel's WAKS (96-5 Kiss FM) and WMJI (Majic 105.7) both "broke format" and played a TON of Michael Jackson music. Java on KISS played several MJ cuts an hour both Thursday and Friday nights, taking calls from listeners reflecting on his music (everything from Jackson 5 cuts to 90's hits). Kasper also spent much of his Friday show spiking in MJ cuts and taking calls. Coverage was tastefully spot-on.

I didn't hear the execution on q, although I will say that although they went all MJ (based on logs from Mediabase and Yes.com) there music selection wasn't nearly as deep as Kiss'.

This "Clear Channel is evil" stuff is getting boring. ALL corporate owned radio stations are guilty of (usually) playing it safe (whether it be CBS, CC or Radio One). Thankfully, Kiss, WMJI, WENZ, WZAK and WQAL all "got it" right this time around.

Just sayin'....

Actually...Michael Jackson fits within WMJI's classic pop hits format, from The Jackson Five, up to Beat It, Billie Jean, Rock With You, Say Say Say (duet with McCartney) and Thriller. Could even get away with Black or White and Man in the Mirror given Majic's present music programming direction.

Kudos to Keith and staff! VT's are what you make them. Doesn't mean you can't go live when needed, or augment programming, when needed. Heck, depending on when the news breaks, some VT talent can re-cut tracks. With Prophet, it's literally instantaneous from one location to another (not really, but close).
