I know - an actual thread criticizing a New York rock station not named WRXP or K-Rock!
Years ago, when Bob Buchmann started programming "Back Wall" selections (i.e. from the "back wall" of the station's vast music library; now that I think about it, I think the now-defunct WNEW-FM might have done their own version way back when), they consisted of deep tracks normally not heard on the radio.
Today, it appears Q104 is misusing the "back wall" concept, in that songs that have now had their fair share of exposure on the radio (in some cases, even qualify to be part of the actual regular format playlist) are given the tag. For example, yesterday, I heard the Metallica song "Unforgiven" as being "from the back wall". This morning, it was Elvis Costello's "Pump It Up" that received the "back wall" buildup.
Maybe Q104 is modifying this concept for the better. After all, it seems like a good portion of WRXP's playlist consists of songs that qualify as "back wall" material, and look at how well they're doing in the ratings. sorry, had to beat that horse again to prove a point...)
