Q105 is Toast

Q105 has lost the core of the station! Mornings is are dead in the water and midday is just as bad. The Eagle continues to grow because it's getting the listeners the Q is blowing off.

That is confusing. If Q is losing listeners to the Eagle, I doubt it is because the Eagle has more personality. Last I heard Q has somebody on the air playing jock 18 hours a day. VT'ed. , off the bird, or whatever, it is not robojocked. The Eagle is robojocked except AM and PM drive. I still prefer Q with all it's flaws.

Let's see, this is the third post in this year alone in which "cbsrocks" has stirred the pot with criticism of a CBS Radio property... In fact, his very first post back in 2005 of an Infinity (former radio corp. name) station in Orlando possibly flipping formats started with the words, "This could be fun!"

Agenda much?

I work second shift, so I don't catch Mason...which..truthfully, I wouldn't anyway...But the PM drive..and dare I say it, the bird sent Tom Kent show have more legit energey..and a more diverse 70s pop playlist than 107.3 did when they did 70s.

And also gone are the days of those godawful "in the middle of another long set of ...." liners

The Eagles playlist of what, 100 songs ( ok, probably more, but jeez its tight) wore me out years ago.

I miss WBBY at 107.3 when they had a full day of personalities, current music and a hint of triple A. I think the Eagle is as dull as dirt. They have zero personalities nights and week-ends-----------how is this better than Q? At least Q still has people on the week-ends too.

I wonder if anybody from COX reads this stuff. They have probably the dullest stations in the market inspite all the issues at CC and CBS

Doesn't matter if you think they're dull. For the most part their numbers are good in the ratings and on their company balance sheet. It's a business, and in these times the streamlined approach by Cox is actually allowing them to do quite well.

No one is forcing you to listen to their stations... and I've just about heard enough about The Eagle. It's successful at the moment. Deal with it.

Except they go heavy on the personality at WHPT and it seems to be a huge success

I just wish they would give Cowhead more airtime to talk. Yesterday, when I was stuck listening to another Pink Floyd song or some other song that puts me to sleep, I had a thought. Too bad Cowhead can't edit the songs down to a minute each so he is still technically playing the same amount of songs, but he gets a little more time to talk. (I know he can't..... it is just wishful thinking....)

That's a unique situation because Bubba The Love Sponge is not a typical personality and or show. However, that's exactly why The Eagle and 97X are doing well too. You don't want to do TOO much of the same thing within your cluster. Say you're a fan of 102.5... but you're tired of Bubba talking this morning, or you simply like listening to "rock" music. Believe it or not, some people still like music! Anyway, you're not flipping over to 98Rock because they're doing the same thing with L&T... TALKING. OK... so if you're a young to middle aged male that likes rock music, what's you're next choice on the FM dial?

I've said it a 100 times on this board, it's all about the cluster and keeping those ears listening to at least 1 of your stations. If you're not listening to 102, they want you on X, Eagle, or Point. If you're not listening to Magic, they want you on Dove, Point, or Eagle. It's as simple as that.

Now you could go on and say 102 shares a music listening audience with WQYK and US 103-5 and that's probably true. However, Cox has got a pretty good lineup as far as I'm concerned for keeping your ears on at least one of their properties.

The Q is toast because they are # 18 in the ratings. Scott Walker Voice tracks his show for the midday and Kincaid couldn't get arrested in this town his number are so low. They are 18th 25-54 and Mason id 16th 25-54. I would pretty much say that's toast! Scott Walker is the PD at Q and when he was fired from CBS Detroit to come to Tampa he also had the station at #18 25-54. It would seem that 18 is his number, because no matter where he goes...18 seems to follow close behind!

Ok----assume CBS is going to flip Q105. What would they do?

1) AMP or NOW and go against 933FLZ and sell it as combo with WLLD?

2) FM talk? Who would be the star talkers?

3) AC or Fresh to go up against Mix and Magic?

4) Some other form of Spanish programming to go with 92.5?

5) Country Gold?

6) Urban AC?

I forgot sports. Sounds good. That would probably destroy AM sports talkers. What would the line-up look like? Does CBS have a sports outlet in NY or LA?

If CBS flipped Q to a non-music format, think Mason would get another gig? He is kinda sorta a Tampa legend

WFAN......

Also they have been launching FM sports talkers elsewhere. It doesn't necessarily depend on ratings for revenue, it can create events and generate more non-traditional revenue than music formats.

Also it won't be hit by the performance royalty on music if that comes to pass.

As far as what it would look like? Maybe a mix of NY and Tampa content would work. Even with the Rays success, you can still talk Yankees.

So what are they waiting for? I'd miss Q, but it sounds like good business.
