Q105 skews older, why?

I live in Davenport and get to hear all the Orlando AND Trampa stations pretty good. Wondering why Q105 sounds slightly different from Sunny 1059 in Orlando? Aren't they both owned by the same company? Never hear The Beatles on Sunny, but hear it all the time on Q105.

How much of these playlists are determined by research, demographics, competition, etc...?

Just curious.

Yes, even though they are both "CBS Classic Hits" stations, 105-9 Sunny FM in Orlando, is quite different in presentation, and music content, in comparison to Q105 in Tampa. Sunny seems to be more '80's based, and the jocks have a bit more individual "personality" than on Q105. The Orlando demos are quite a bit younger, so that may explain why Sunny does well with a more recent "Oldies" playlist. Q105 seems to be more of a traditional "Oldies" station, with more of a classic Top 40 "Super Q"/Drake style approach on air, where the station has a more unified "personality". Considering the older demos in Tampa Bay, it makes more sense for them to be playing '70's and '80's , AND some classic '60's hits! CBS radio has been very successful with their Oldies stations, and IMHO, should be congratulated for avoiding a "cookie cutter" approach! Also, congrats to the PD's and airstaffs for their well deserved success! :)

It's simple... There are a lot more of US old farts in the Tampa Bay area.... Pure & Simple... and that's the way (uh huh) I like it....

I don't know, have Sunny FM on the alarm clock in the bedroom and have heard Elvis at least two nights in a row. I have also heard them play The Beach Boys as well as the Beatles during Domino's shift.

Sunny FM does play some 60's, (and even some early 60's) however Sunny is going after a younger demo. They are not afraid to play 80's music which really turns me on to them. Where else Q105 really limits themselves in that area. I think it also shows because I have heard some liners on Sunny that mention BJ105 and Y106. Which were both Orlando CHR stations in the 80's

I have noticed a trend though. It seems during the overnight hours Sunny will lean more towards the older music. As mentioned above I heard Elvis two nights in a row.

Does anyone know were I can get a 105-9 Sunny FM bumper sticker. That or a T-Shirt from the station, will pay cash.

Who's name is Bill, mine sure as hell isn't. Oh and for the record I don't drive a Crown Vic. On top of that I'm in my early 20's, not a stereotypical geezer or whatever you call them.

I can get how you can say that because I still insist on using an Alarm Clock to wake-up and listen to music while falling to sleep.

Orlando is a very young market. When I lived there in the 90's the median age was 31. Much higher in the Tampa area....

I still think the one thing that separates the Q from 105.9 is masonmasonmasonmason. 105.9's liners are funnier, they don't rely on half the new voice guy and half Charlie whats his name. They focus on music, while the Q is all about mason, and the increasingly unfunny and now downright annoying drop ins and goofy laughs from "listeners".

Q's non morning drive guys are forcing it, but they're not "boss jocks" like the "old days". 105.9's jocks seem to just have their own personalities without having to rely on dreck..

Ah, but thanks to 970, we've lost the 105.9 in my neck of the woods...Gotta have one more station with Glenn, Rush, etc.

While I do like Q105... I have NOT been able to handle Mason Dixon since he was on afternoons decades ago... I just think he has an overinflated ego... I can't stand the canned fake laughter... his so called "jokes" are NOT funny to me... I often get the feeling that it's not the least bit about me the listener, but ALL ABOUT MASON... and I despise that ...Sorry, I know he's been here since dirt...Yeah he has talent.. I mean at least he has kept his job for a long time in one market... but I really even go out of my way to avoid listening to him whenever he's on and have for decades...

They are still number one on my presets in spite of all the changes. They are the closest I have found to radio when I was young, healthy, and hot as hell. They got jingles, James Brown, Sonovox, and now an overnight guy.
