Q87.7 Underground Alternative is set to debut tomorrow 5/7/12

Q87 Underground Alternative is officially live

This is definitely Q101 that's for sure. This is a straight up alternative station I've hear Bush, M83, Phoenix, and Foster The People so far. I'm liking what they've been playing so far. I guess it went live at 7pm, it sounds like they are doing what Q101 should have been doing.

Re: Q87 Underground Alternative is officially live

Sorry didn't realize i spelled like an idiot in my first post. This station is what Q101 failed to be and I'm impressed with the playlist so far. Gone are the days of the same avenged seven-fold song every hour, this IS an actual alternative station. Merlin has actually impressed me with station.

I prefer a straight alternative station as well, but Q101 leaned to the hard side for logical reasons, since there's no active rock station in the market.

Re: Q87 Underground Alternative is officially live

Personally, I'm welcoming Q87.7 with a fair amount of caution and skepticism. Their posts and comments on Facebook and Twitter sound a lot like Merlin Media's brand of arrogance, and the guy they hired as the new OM of Q87.8 and WLUP is another one of Randy Michaels' buddies who couldn't keep a job under someone else for even a year:

The splash page with the "listen live" link has disappeared, but here's the pop-up that opened up for the stream (which is still streaming silence):

I understand what you're saying but, Jim Richards did what Emmis failed to do for how many years? This station sounds great, all that's missing is some on air talent.

I understand that Q101 leaned hard due to the market here being what it was but it was ALWAYS done pretty half assed, and the final years of Q101 were horrible to say the least.

I will actually give Merlin kudos for what this station sounds like, I'm beyond impressed.

Don't get me wrong. I'm definitely giving it a chance, and as I mentioned above, I much prefer a straight alternative station rather than a hard-leaning one.

I'm just skeptical about Merlin Media and Randy Michaels pulling this off without screwing it up (as they've done with everything else so far).

First song was "Satellite" by Rise Against.

The website's temporary splash page has a "listen live" link, but it's playing silent audio at the moment.

Music finally went live on the stream an hour or two ago.

Out of curiosity, is there a Chicagoan who can check out what imagery (if any) is being used by WKQX on channel 6 and/or Comcast 877?

Re: Q87 Underground Alternative is officially live

The guys who bought the Q101 intellectual property are probably feeling like chumps right about now. Any word on whether they asked for a non-compete clause? (If not, they're idiots.) Can they sue Merlin for using the "Q"? Are they trying to get their money back and wash themselves of this mistake?

And the plot thickens...

The Q101 online folks have found their own terrestrial signal. Now, "Q101" can be heard on WJJG 1530.

Re: Q87 Underground Alternative is officially live

And Q87.7 is now on TuneIn, for the smartphone folks.

Sounds really good, but the stream is a bit jumpy. Overall, the music selection is good. As of 6AM, sounds like they have at least one 'live' voice.

Also noticed their "non-standard" TOH ID. They say "WKQX Chicago and WIQI HD-3 Chicago", which they can do, so long as they do the official TOH visually on analog ch. 6.
