Q92.9 HD2 Classic Rock (free weekend)

Hello All

I have created a (temporary) web streamer for WLTJ's HD2. I will give you all access to it, I am encoding in aacPLUS v2 @24kbps which requires Winamps player or if your a Mac or Linux person like myself use VLC's player, windows media player won't work.

This audio is from my HD modulation monitor in my office so this is a real off air HD feed, sorry no song artist or title

I can connect 25 people at one time, and as always please give input. I am open for suggestions. negitive and positive, I know the music leans towards classic hits. but I do have over 2,000 songs in rotation with me adding more when i get the time. I do pride myself on having the Album versions of each song played

http:69.95.45.53:8000/listen.pls

thanks
Paul Carroll
Ch...Oh, you know who I am by now

I changed the encoder to a streaming MP3 instead of acc+ this means all media players will work, including iTunes and WMP

it's now 48kHz 44.1 mono

Sounds awesome so far, Paul.

Any chance you can get the bosses to put a full stream of all of your HD stations 24/7 on the website? ;D

thanks for the input, and yes we will be streaming the HD's for Q as well as Bob. I'm about 30 days away from putting it online, and these streams will display song artist and title
I'm waiting for the additional IP's and some more bandwidth and build the audio server. but this is a back burner project so it might be longer than 30 days. I just wanted to do a test this weekend to see how things sound and let others listen as well, I might let the stream be active for a few more days. people are listening to it

Thanks for the link, Paul... I will be sure to check it out. I do have a question for you regarding coverage of the HD signal compared to analog. I have read about the possible increase of the digital power output in the FM sidebands since the HD coverage is poor when compared to analog. I don't yet have an HD radio and was wondering what your experience has been, both in a home or office and in the car. Where I live, 92.9 has a great signal but 96.9 has some issues with other nearby signals. Also, how does the hilly terrain of Western PA affect digital coverage? Thanks!

Nor is it played by any other classic rock station in this hemisphere. You will hear it on oldies stations normally. Too pop for the classic rock format by most definitions.

This is where I get confused about "Classic Rock", 3 Dog Night was rock as I knew it back in the early 1970s, and its classic stuff. My tolerance for classic rock as we hear it on radio is AC/DC, Peter Frampton, Van Halen, etc. Maybe thats why I don't like classic rock on terrestrial radio...its the same songs over and over again, and I listen to The X and new music. This evening I've been really enjoying listening to the link provided by Paul. Most songs I've heard tonight are ones I never heard on DVE or Channel 97, and its been refreshing to hear the different songs. Just listening to Hocus Pocus by Focus as I'm typing this....what an obscure song that rocked in its day. Maybe I'll have to seriously consider HD Radio in the future.

In the early days there was another format genre called "Classic hits"...it's what the Classic Trax show on Y97 was in the 80's. We played more hit singles than album cuts... so you'd hear Chicago, Rare Earth, 3 Dog Night, BTO, Seger, Sly and the Family Stone, ELO, Beatles, Eagles, Cat Stevens, Donovan, the Cars.. and very little Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd.

Very few stations stuck with this spin on the format, even the "Arrow" format which stood for All-Rock n' Roll-Oldies. Consultants turned it into traditional AOR without the new songs.

with the multicast HD channels we can relax the tight noose thats choking the music on the analogs, my format on HD2 on Q is like the old AOR days. but I will play some deep cuts like Tin Lizzy's Cowboy Song, or Post Tostee, the LP version of Don't Look Back by Boston. Car's Candy-O, Journey-Feeling That Way/Anytime and the versions you should hear but don't from Pink Floyd, Styx, Heart, Elton John, Who, Beatles I can go on and on. Speaking for my generation I play the music those in their 40's would enjoy. I have lots of emails from HD radio owners who listen to Q's HD2 and when I have it off the air for repair I get the "when's it coming back on" emails and calls. Is it like DVE or Channel 97, No ....will it ever be. No

If you think it needs a song that fits, post it here or email me [email protected]

And when I started this thread, I mentioned the music leans towards "classic hits" speaking of hits. I like the response the audio server is getting, people are listening for hours to HD2 via the web so I will leave the server active TFN (till further notice)

Thanks

UPDATE:

I have created multi streams for your listening enjoyment

1) is for the Windows Media Player or iTunes for streaming MP3 its the sams link as before http://69.95.45.53:8000/listen.pls

2) is for the Winamp Users who like acc+ streams this one is in stereo and higher audio quality click here http://69.95.45.53:9000/listen.pls

thanks for listening

You're awesome...sounds better on my stereo speakers. I listened in mono for about 4 or 5 hours last night, and posted comments about it. This is what Classic Rock should be. When the Classic Hits was the buzz, I was in eastern PA and we had WMGK 103 in Philly that was Classic Hits format but they also had a playlist that eventually was the same recycled songs over and over again. Thanks again! Now playing: Love Gun - KISS...what, you mean they had other hits besides Rock And Roll All Night?? ;D

I doubled the amount of people that can listen to both streams, now that should keep people from getting the "stream is maxed" message

I just clicked on the link and see you are still streaming. Thanks for keeping it going. I haven't listened for a couple of weeks. Is there a chance you are going to eventually have the song title and artist showing while listening on Winamp?

I notice activity with people listening so I'm leaving it active

I will have a new encoder for Winamp and WMP/iTunes that will display song artist and title. I will stream audio from Q92.9's HD2 & HD3 and Bob's HD2 & HD3. in test mode it works great then crashes XP without any reason so I'm now building a Linux server, which I should have done in the first place, give me some time I will debug the XP or do the Linux and then publish the IP's to see how it works with multible connections

Paul, thank you for the update. I will be happy to test the IP's with the others once ready.

Yes I did, sorry I was moving equipment around in my office a few days ago and I disconnected the HD Streamer, I'll be working Saturday (7-19) and I'll connect it back up.

And Now For Something Completely Different........

WLTJ is now broadcasting FMeXtra www.dreinc.com I know, I know who can listen to FMeXtra it's a long story but if anyone is interested on what we are doing with it email me. and I might set up a internet audio streamer and let you hear what FMeXtra sounds like.

Are you still running IBOC (HD radio) with FMeXtra? Is it possible to do this without either system interfering with one another?

It's unfortunate that FMeXtra has not become as popular as IBOC. From what I have read, it is cheaper and easier for radio stations to install FMeXtra over IBOC.

What is WLTJ doing with FMeXtra? Does it sound better than HD radio?

Does WLTJ promote the fact that it broadcasts in HD radio on the station itself, hoping listeners might buy a radio and listen in?

Sorry about the questions. I'm just interested in digital radio and how WLTJ and WRRK are using it.

I live to the north of Pittsburgh in Erie, where Citadel and Connoisseur are not broadcasting with HD radio. It's probably because we are not a top 25 radio market - Erie is rated market #168 by Arbitron.
