Q92.9

Wonder why this station has had such trouble in the Pittsburgh market? Seems like its been a while since it has done well. I know its sister station in Kansas City does well with a pop format, and don't know the musical taste in Pittsburgh, but wonder if this legacy station can capture the attention of the market better?

There are two Hot AC stations in Pittsburgh, WLTJ 92.9 and WBZZ 100.7. WBZZ has a large owner behind it, Audacy. But WLTJ is owned by the Frischling family, so it may not have the funds and resources to compete on a big market level with Audacy.

There are some markets with two Hot AC stations. But in Pittsburgh, other than Country and Hot AC, each FM station has its format to itself.

Steel City probably has a pretty good cluster offering, for only having two stations in Pittsburgh. Bob-FM has great reach and leans slightly male, and Q92.9 has a decent audience, leaning female.

If I ran Steel City, I'd consider going all-in on men and flipping 92.9 to rock, trying to steal some audience from WDVE. But this owner has run AC (in several flavors) on 92.9 since the mid 80s, and probably isn't considering a rock flip.

Even though 100.7 might be considered "Hot AC," their daytime playlist is pretty similar to iHeart's 96.1 CHR format. I have both as presets and they usually have similar song selections. Just over the last few months, there have been several times they've had the same song on at the same time.

Admittedly, I don't listen to 92.9 much (it's not a preset) but they seem to lean more towards the "Adult" in "Adult Contemporary," whereas 100.7 leans more towards the "contemporary." I've always thought of 92.9 to be like a slightly hipper WISH 99.7 (AC).
