Q94 and MIX 94.7

D

Dave Barger

Guest
I read the posts regarding MIX94.7. Considering yesterday was our initial day to broadcast MIX94.7 and according to most posts we did not do badly. I thought that you may be interested in a few excerpts from a PRESS RELEASE we sent out today explaining some of the changes that we have made.

“The company began planning the changes in 2004. “ Expanding our news department, moving the studios for news-talk WRTA-AM 1240, “Music of Your Life” WKMC-AM 1370, WBRX-FM 94.7 and WBXQ-FM 94.3, to a Central location, splitting WBRX and WBXQ, changing WRTA’s talk radio line-up, as well as program improvements on WKMC are all part of a project we began working on over three years ago.”

A few weeks ago I thought the word was out when a I read a post alluding to a new country station coming to Central PA. If it was referring to us, it was the right church, wrong pew. That post suggested a new Country station.

We hope that the changes we have made and continue to tweak meets and exceeds your expectations.

Where can we see the whole release, Dave, if you please?

Dave,
Does Mix have a website yet? And are the rumors true? Is Rich Dennis...the morning Menace coming back to the Airwaves in Altoona? That would almost be as huge as when Ed Sherlock let Sean McKay loose at the "Q" back in the day after he got out of the joint. Too bad that didn't last long, as Sean would have put Q94 on the map years ahead of schedule had he been allowed to stay before WFBG forced him to return to their camp.

ANSWERING your POSTED QUESTIONS

We should be able to have the entire NEWS RELEASE on WBRX-WBXQ WEB Site soon. WTAJ-TV did a short piece on their Tuesday 5:30-6:00 pm news.

MIX 94.7 will have its own WEB Site soon.

Plans for the Mornings are still in discussion. We have not made a definite decision at this time. You can expect an announcement shortly.
We have talked with several former radio personalities known to Central PA radio. We have also talked with others who have made their mark on morning radio in other markets.

Rich Dennis is busy doing an excellent job in sales with our company.

I like the format. It appears to include a wide library and during the 70s-80s hour at 1pm there are some surprises from what most AC formats would spin. I heard a Poison record the other day. I'm back in Minneapolis now, so I didn't get a chance to listen as long as wanted; however, the automation seems smooth. I didn't notice any liners fireing in the wrong place or any poor network re-joins. Keep that up and it will sound more like a local station and less like a network. The Weather Channel is a great idea and that way it doesn't sound as out of place when a voice other than the jock is reading the wx forecast. I'm impressed and a few other people I know gave it a listen and enjoyed the variety. Many of those songs are not being played by the other area stations. Of couse, with Waly continuing to add newer music, that could change. If it was up to me, I would do all I could to get out in front of people, even if most of the programming is off the bird. There is enough of a staff with the other stations to represent Mix. You have Doug over at WRTA who is no stranger to the AC format--unless he already has too much on his plate. I would have Mix sponsor an 80s Prom this spring. Promote it on air, give away tickets, and then have a night of 80s music and dancing. That might help to create some listener loyalty and help people feel better connected with the station. Get some of the jocks at Jones to record a few promos for the 80s Prom.

I don't care for the calendar girl stuff. Way too much talk is devoted to that and I feel it is degrading. It was bad enough when one station did it. Now we have two stations doing it.

I did sample Q-94 and I really enjoyed the music mix. I can easily tell that it has been freshed up compared to a few years ago. Good job on the newer stuff. I know that both country and classic rock stations are playing the new Eagles song. I was happy to hear that on Q-94. I also heard U2's Mysterious Ways from the early 90s. That was good to hear. I think that they way to do classic rock is to mix the older classic rock with newer cuts by those same artists and similar sounding artists. U2, Counting Crows, newer Santana, Smash Mouth, etc. are all getting classic rock airplay now and sound much better mixed with the older cuts than the newer Active Rock cuts sound mixed in with the older tracks. At least I think so. There are also a lot of country stations that mix in classic rock. Clear Channel seems to be big into that idea right now.

A few other things I noticed while I was in town....

Majic 99 is not really a Jack format. The music library is really good and I enjoyed it, but with the exception of a few tracks that lean more rock or urban, this station is just a larger than usual mainstream AC libaray. Jacks usually focus on the rock side of the spectrum, although doing that in this case would kill QWK and WBUS. I like the AC approach and it should work because there is no other straight AC in State College. Majic seems to be in between WOWY and 3WZ. A lot of the liners seem cheesy. I could tell they were trying to copy Jack, but it wasn't working for me. Maybe I am just too used to hearing the Jack liners. Majic and Wowy get my votes for the best playlists in State College.

Waly sounds really good with all the 80s AC in rotation. I missed hearing the Real Deal during the weeknights. Waly would get my vote as the top station in Altoona. While I also like the music on Mix, nothing beats local radio.

Who in the hell is this "radio guru/programmer who has apparently has nothing better to do than drive around in his car (and I bet it has CD antennas sticking out all over it) critiquing Altoona/Hollidaysburg/State College radio stations. God forbid they ever take Star Trek off the air or this fellow will take the gas pipe. Perhaps instead of worrying about the music, rotation, jack, etc, he ought to worry about the "entertainment" between the tunes and the "cheesey" promos. This fellow is no doubt someone who was never good enough to go on the air. It's the old story...those who do, do...those who can't teach. His ramblings dry me nuts. What are his credentials? I bet he wears funny looking glasses also. By the way, Sean McKay worked for Sherlock during work release for a few days, went back to college (?) and returned to WFBG later that fall because he WANTED to return...not because he was forced to return. Get your facts straight.

Wow Fryman, you are such the nice person.

I am disappointed in the comment those who Do... Do, those who can't teach.

I have done and I also felt I have taught well. Dave McCall was one of my pupils. AJ has learned some from me. Hell, I bet even Hilton has learned a little from me. Maybe Tommy Edwards can say he picked up a shortcut or two from me.

Some of the best programmers are also some of the best teachers. Scott Shannon for example taught MJ Kelli at WFLZ in Tampa. Look at Clarke Ingraham in Pittsburgh. The list of who he taught is long and distinguished.

So what if someone is giving a decent critique of a format change. It wasn't with a knife in the back. It seemed like an honest assessment.

If I were the PD, my choice for mornings wouldn't be Rich Dennis, but that is me. Good luck to Dave Barger because I would love to see Carol Logan lose.

I post my thoughts and opinions because I can. Radio is my hobby. I listen and observe. If you don't agree with my opinions, don't read my posts. I would never force my views on anyone, but I enjoy reading the thoughts of other people...even those I disagree with. I figure some will appreciate reading mine, even if they know I am wrong. The point of the board is to discuss radio--that is what I and most other people do. I'm not here to argue about stuff. It doesn't matter what my experience is--I still have observations and ideas to post. Some of my ideas might be good. Sometimes I do wear glasses--I look cool with them. Perhaps I should begin a radio blog on my own site and post there instead?

Sorry, you are WRONG. McKay went to work for Q94 on work release whenever WFBG chose to invoke the almighty "no compete" clause in his contract which more or less took him off the air at the Q. WFBG later brought him back as they knew he was good for them and I don't doubt they were good to him as well. I specifically remember this matter as it made headlines at the time in the Altoona Mirror. I am sure he wanted to return to WFBG when they took him back as I don't doubt he was paid a handsome sum and he deserved it with his numbers. Perhaps you should check into your facts before you go off on other people for theirs.

If I make a mistake, I am man enough to admit it, but in this case unless the newspaper chose to print some kind of false scandal aimed at tarnishing the image of the Then Mighty 1290, I'd have to say my recollection of the events is correct. Don't know if Ed still frequents this board or not, but if he does, perhaps Mr. Sherlock can clear up the facts so we know the real scoop.

Mr. Sherlock can be emailed at [email protected] . I'm am too told that WFBG used legal means to pull him from Q, back to FBG. Maybe someone could go over to Cartridge World and ask Ed Giller!

Mock, I enjoyed reading your opinions. That's what this board is for. If you don't like that, then don't log on!
