Q99 Roanoke/Lynchburg's New PD

AllAccess reports that Jim Murphy, until recently program director of Infinity's KBAY/KEZR in San Jose, CA, heads to the Mel Wheeler cluster in Roanoke to become PD of AC powerhouse WSLQ/99.1 "Q99".

Murphy left the San Jose stations as a result of their sale to NextMedia, which is installing their own management.

Q99's PD slot has been open since long-time PD Don Morrison retired to Florida a few months ago.<P ID="signature">______________

Beats me...probably in the sub-92.1 MHz range? :D

Just to clarify...I used to work in the R/L market, so that's why I'm here on this board.

Well, I must say...Mel Wheeler runs their Roanoke cluster (at least Star and Q-99) like top-10 market radio stations. The pay must be pretty decent if you can get a job there, but I tend to think that any job with either Star Country or Q-99 are probably one of the hardest gigs to get in VA...with the exception of FM 99 in Norfolk...

Just my two cents...I still shake my head everytime my 'seek' button lands on Q-99 from 96.9 miles away! Star Country can be harder in downtown Farm Vegas because of the terrible bleeding we get from WFLO-AM

I've said it before, when the topic came up...

They run that place like major market radio. And I mean REAL major market radio, where the stations actually have local voices in the building, and the talent is there, and the management is supportive. It's no accident that they attract people from not only large markets like San Jose and Sacramento...the K92 morning team used to work in Philadelphia, for crying out loud.

It's what happens when you stock a well-run facility with talented folks, and I only hope other clusters in other markets take note. And as noted, they have a bright, gleaming new building with all the toys.

Unfortunately, the sudios in that new building have the worst room ambience I've heard on the radio, aside from college stations. Whenever a Q personality talks without a bed, you can hear the room.
