QQQ... 970 in Brandon & the Hispanic Sound in N Jax

I thought the new owners had solid plans for the old AM out of Brandon.
Anyone know what happened as its off the air I am told...

Sorry, I'm not in the market right now so get my info second hand here and elsewhere.

Any word too on the Hispanic or Women's Network format on JAX's north side....
What is the station doing now?

I still think Hispanic radio could work there.... better than the possibility in Meridian I see mentioned in another post....

I came on here to ask the same thing about WZQK (ex WRKN) I heard they were moving the towers. The towers are gone and I'd like to know where they are rebuilding it, that is IF they are rebuilding. There is a red pickup truck in the old WRKN parking lot that is always there, and I passed by today and there was a boat in the driveway but the building looks deserted. Does anyone know where the new towers will be? or has the station bit the dust. WQST still annouces WZQK at the top of the hour, but still nothing but static on 970. I kinda miss my "real country"

sorry for bringing up something about a small AM station, sometimes people on this board make fun of you when you mention them.

Lots of history behind that station, including the reason they had two towers anyway. Don't be embarrased to be interested in the past..it's where we all came from....Thanks

There doesn't seem to be anything in the online FCC queries about the station moving anywhere. The tower location map shows them at the intersection of MS-471 (N College St) and Value Park Drive. Literally on the road! Is that the old location?

Retired DJ: At last check, WIIN 780 was still running the women's network - found here: http://www.greenstoneradio.com/update/

Zach: If you mean the Google map to the WZQK site as linked by Radio-Locator, I do believe that's the old site to the left of the marker. It's my understanding that the move was due to a case of losing their lease (to the land). As for who might know more...

Mr. Ingram: I for one would like to know more history about the mighty voice of (W)RanKiN (County). Do tell.

I am trying to find out, myself... It is dark and I have called a broker to see what they can find out.. I'd love to have this one (if it's cheap to get the license) or LMA it... I have a format hole I see in the market, and would love to bring my 30+ years experience to it... :)

OK.Doctor...the original station was owned by the Martin family of Waynesboro....they wanted a non directional 1 KW with an eye to the Jackson market...this was in the early 60's, the time I was Chief engineer of WWUN, Jackson. They were caught in what was then known as the " Suburban Rule"
that limited coverage of "rim shot" AM stations into metro markets...hence the requirement that they be directional toward Jackson. This was probably instrumental in their limited success, and the construction costs and limited metro coverage led to an early sale to the Blossman operation from Louisiana. In the early 70's my firm was retained to add an FM (WRJH), which quickly became a success as a gospel outlet for Jackson...the rest is history, and thanks.

Ok.... so far this is good.

but............ 1. Is WRKN 970am moving the tower or is it off the air and maybe available?????

2. WIIN was running the Hispanic radio format last time I was in the market? If they are not
now, is anyone else.

3. Skipperthomas, if you wanna reveal trade secrets I'm curious; what format hole?

4. If 970 is available there may be someone interested.

Another Question to add, since I've looked at the pattern (DA-Semi/Directional), How did the signal do in Jackson?? By the looks of the strength pattern, it still should put a metro grade signal (no city grade) over the majority of the population in the daytime... Please let me know, oh wise ones of the JAX in MS....

You are right about that.. I think the broker I gave the 'off air' information to, has the attorney's number I found on the CDBS page and electronic file for the station..

I used to listen to 970 quite often. Shortly before Mrs. Harris sold it the signal had gotten pretty poor. It could barely be picked up at my house which around 10 miles from the tower. After it was sold and went country they must have fixed it and had a decent signal signal all the way to the metrocenter and could be heard all the way to clinton but it was getting a little rough out that far. the nightime signal was ok at my house but began to konk out around the 49/20 stack. Some nights better than others. The audio had gotten really bad shortly before it went dark last year. and also sounded like it was on reduced power most of the time. There are subdivisions going up left and right around the old tower site and I'm guessing they want the tower land for more houses. It looks like they could have found an audience with all the people moving in around that area. For a while they simulcast a talk show from 98.1 in Hattisburg every afternoon. Maybe someone could call WQST and ask them what they are doing, since they still anounce WZQK at the top of the hour, even though its dark.
