You need to post this at the Texas Assoc of broadcasters site. TAB.ORG not here.

"Clear Channel station so don't by that new Mustang just yet." It's "Buy" not by.
If its a Clear Channel station, expect cheap wages, long hours of voice tracking, and not staying long enough to make your apartment deposit worth while.

Amen !

Not to go against the grain here, but that CC cluster has some pretty longtime residents there- Danny Merrill, Sean Erickson and Dan Patrick. They had nice facilities, production, and so forth. Might be a very good opening for someone who is starting to look for fulltime somewhere, and wants to learn from pretty good people.

Lufkin wasn't too expensive when I lived there.

In fact, reading this again, this 'yob might be a helluva shot for someone.

Please, mid day in just about any small market is like that - what a total crackpot statement.

Not" total" Just plain reality. A waste of time, energy and resources. If you can't afford to put someone live on the air besides drive time, ...sell it!

Ed,
Did you work for CC somewhere in your radio past?
Just wondered.
Thanks.

I don't know smallmarket (or at least I don't think I do), but I do know they have a great staff down in Lufkin.

Smallmarket, so you guys are #2 now? Congrats, but what happened to K-Fox? That just doesn't seem right.... Q being #2.. :)

Tell Dan that Scott said hi and that he'd better get K-Fox back to #2 darnit!!!! lol

> This is Dan, Scott and I am working to get it to number 2 again, that was a spring county by county. We should have a real book soon. I also do the music for Q107 (gotta love Clear Channel!) So I am kinda torn. I am glad both stations are doing well and are number one in their demo's. Are you doing Hot AC right now? Cause right now I am playing country. The format needs something. The market here has changed alot. email me, and give me your digits and we'll talk I work at clear channel so it shouldn't be to hard to figure out what it is. SM

Yes I did in San Antonio. I saw Lowry and BJ"Red"McCombs walk the halls a lot there. I left ON MY OWN with no suggestions to do so,for a better job.

Those starting out in the business should not plan for a long stay or a great check if they are considering the Lufkin job. Too much to do for low pay,and the sound quality suffers. Only sales matters not programming.

You are making it sound like the past days of radio were all wine and roses. Didn't job hopping become the norm in the late 50s and early 60's? Even if you were at the big dogs (KBOX, KLIF) there was a lot of turnover at all stations big and small. I mean, year to year, middays, AM, afternoons, nights.

Check out the Morning Show changes at KLIF--

Ken Knox: 1958 - October, 1960

Murphy & Harrigan (Tom Murphy & Ron Chapman): October, 1960 - March, 1962

Charlie & Harrigan (Jack Woods & Ron Chapman): March, 1962 - August, 1964

Charlie & Harrigan (Dan McCurdy & Ron Chapman): August, 1964 - June, 1965

Charlie & Harrigan (Brice Armstrong & Jack Auldridge): June, 1965 - June, 1966

Charlie & Harrigan (Jack Woods & Paul Menard): June, 1966 - November, 1966

Ken & Granny ): December, 1966 - August, 1968

Deano Day: August, 1968 - January, 1969

(plug http://www.historyofklif.com/ if you haven't already seen the site. Very neat for the history of a Gordon station).

That's 9 AM changes in 9 years. Some moved on to better things, some just moved on.

Also, it is not only true with radio, but very many jobs that there is high turnover, extra hours and not a lot of security.

Step back a second, look at the job, look at the market, and then look at an opportunity for someone, other than yourself, who needs a break in this bidness who may need a shot at polishing up their career.

I don't think it is more of a Clear Channel bash anymore, I think of it being "Well, radio was a helluva lot better in the old days, and anything that is out there now is crap". Hey buddy, back off the turntable, and release the lever of the cart machine- change takes place, even in radio, and maybe you'll see that there are some good things out there that are going to help this business.

It doesn't matter if the owner is in San Antonio...or down the hall sitting on great leather office furniture he traded out at Dave's Furniture Store on main St., you land just as hard on your ass when you get fired. Everyone bitches about there being no training ground..."where's the hungry new talent coming from???" Here's an ad for just that and the trolls here are slamming it. Newsflash...Every radio job is not a 3 hour show for $100K a year.

> "Training ground". You're right there should be training grounds with constructive training and developing a talent, not just follow orders . Talent reading a liner, recording a show with liners and no personality, no phones,is boring to a listener. They are not as dumb as some salespeople, gms who were salespeople think they are. In response to an earlier post about KLIF/KBOX some of those morning shows went on to later day parts and stayed awhile longer, and some went to other properties in other markets. They learned their craft and learned how to communicate not just what to communicate. A very big difference compared to todays radio.

Who HASN'T followed orders or dubbed spots or recored a show onto a reel or into a system when they started out... or caught the network spots coming down the pipe...or pulled carts, beds and bits for the morning show???.Any of you start out being the morning guy??? I'd feel WAY more comfortable with a guy that CAN backtime, that CAN dub a show in, and that CAN do time & temp when he starts out than a kid that thinks he has Rick Dees talent from the get go. Wasn't there a post in this thread about good, solid, longtime people in Lufkin that a newbie could learn from???

Sales drives radio....like it or not. Be it Lufkin or Los Angeles.
Lemme know when you find that perfect job with the perfect sales staff and the perfect PD....The real world isn't perfect...wether you are a salesman for Radio Shack, Wal MArt, or an announcer for radio. Let's talk about those "good ol days" when your boss came to ya and asked if you wanted Thanksgiving or Christmas off this year....

Good points. The boss did ask about holidays. I worked some for extra pay, etc. I was treated right, and some I didn't have to.

Pulling carts etc. Yes that WAS training. It was also training in small markets as far as backtiming, pulling your music, spots, and learning how to adlib, be conversational, those elements are missing, now its read this don't adlib,no requests. If you have been in the business 15+ years at least you know exactly what I am referring to in comparasion to today. The audience wants an entertainer as well as an informer, not someone just reading lines, with the shorter than ever playlist. They want their station to sound like their community not far far away. oh well this will go back and forth endlessly. You have your broadcasters who broadcast and you have your corporate suits who think they are broadcasters. They are the ones in domination, and a chief reason radio audiences are dwindling. Corp will play with the numbers to justify themselves, while a listener turns them off and turns an ipod on.

This job was a "helluva shot" when I did it 15 years ago (has it been that long?). Back when Q107 was actually located in Nacogdoches and we had brand new studios, I started off working on-air overnights. Then there was an over abundance of sales that resulted in a need for a ton of copy to be written. So I was asked to write copy. Then the Production Director quit and left a vacancy in Mid-Days. I stopped working overnights and filled in part-time until they found an new mid-day talent but I got to keep the Production Director job. Then the Traffic Director quit because she broke up with her boyfriend who worked afternoon drive and I was the only one who knew how to work a computer (at the time). So then I became Traffic Director too. Then the radio station sold and the new owner wanted to computerize the AM station (KSFA at the time). So guess who got roped into that too? Then I learned so much that I needed more money and went to BUI and KNUE in Tyler. Then I learned so much that I left there and went to RCS.

My career path has taken an entirely different turn since my days at Q107, but I will always remember and cherish those times as some of the greatest in my life. A small market radio opportunity may not be the financial landslide we would all hope for, but it does have numerous benefits for someone who is getting into the business and in the end, it is what one makes of it.
