96 years old and over 70 years as Queen. That's remarkable. She certainly was a class act. It's been a long long time since England had a King. It almost seemed like Elizabeth might outlive Charles! Sad day, but she lived a glorious life. King Charles has the dignity to carry on the monarchy...

Queen Elizabeth II dead at 96

Woah Churchill at the time of the former Queen's inauguration initially thought Queen Elizabeth was too young to be Queen at that time. But then again he later earned the respect of the Queen of England.
The current PM Truss is in a crazy position just days after being inaugurated by the now former Queen now has to navigate the UK through mourning Elizabeth plus inaugurating the King of England while she had to get her cabinet on 10 Downing Street.
I send my sincerest condolences. I hardly can believe that such an icon the world over for over 5 generations would just vanish like that. (Sorry for the bad grammar). As several others on this thread have said, she was the class act for an entire empire, always kind, and she moved the British isles ahead by a few centuries by her love for her citizens, who in turn gave her the utmost respect. When you're on the throne for 70+ years, your family will drop a lot of trouble your way (to get into the details would be unnecessarily disrespectful right now), but she always handles things with an open mind, and with poise.
Under her, it was hard to believe that this was the same England, which had so much tumultuous periods, and yet Elizabeth delivered peace to the throne. It wasn't that many centuries ago that violent battles for the throne was commonplace, and you was lucky to last long enough to produce any heirs.
Because Queen Elizabeth was quite the unifier in politics and more, we never had to worry about the security of the UK when we needed them the most in WWII. Now, I want to be an optimist here, and say that King Charles will shape his reign off of the playbook that Elizabeth set up so elegantly, but no one will quite match the level she brings to the table.
Even countries that had nothing to do with her came to her admiration. I don't know who the lader is in a lot of countries, bet you can bet that they know who she is, which is why it's so deep.
We have forever lost one of the best to do it, and we used to joke that she'd live forever. Clearly, 96 years old is a close second.
Anyways, you all have my condolences, and she has now taken her place in Heaven. Hopefully the tea is tasty up there, and as for Charles, long live the king!

Some U.S. radio stations played somber music when JFK was assassinated. Some FM stations may have played somber music in the immediate aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks, too, but I'm not sure.
HGTV and Food Network aired somber music and a bumper screen on that day.

I too send my condolences to everyone in the U.K.
Two days ago, when looking at the photos of Elizabeth's meeting with Liz Truss, I had the thought that The Queen looked much more frail than just a few months ago, but otherwise seemed to be doing okay. The news of her passing so soon afterwards was a bit of a shock.
She was a unique and classy lady and will be missed.

And polite, dignified William is practically ready to become king right now. Charles probably gives thanks nightly that Harry wasn't born first.
As others have mentioned, Her Majesty The Queen understood her role (as did Prince Phillip) and executed it with grace. One could also tell the amount of respect others in the royal family held for her - There were a few public events where just a look from the Queen or a quick tap with her finger was all it took for her grand children, for instance, to snap back to attention after she'd caught them goofing off or acting less than "royal".
I personally enjoyed reading about her dry, but biting sense of humor, the fact that she liked to do impressions of people, and the fact that, regardless of her age, she had an admiration for the drink, including a daily routine of a gin and Dubonnet (fortified wine) on ice before lunch, a martini with lunch and a glass of wine afterward, and a glass of champagne before bed. There are also several stories and photos of her driving her Land Rover, at times jumping the thing up onto curbs to pull around other vehicles and obstructions ahead of her. After seeing all the photos of the "public face" the Queen was expected to display, I really appreciated reading and seeing items that showed her much more human side...the one few got to see and the one that only went on display when she wasn't executing matters of state and not so many cameras and 'official' media were around.

I'm going to leave this....it's about coverage and aftermath of the Queen's mourning period on radio and TV. Maybe this belongs in another thread. Black ties, sombre tunes and 'no comedy' - all the changes you'll notice on TV (despite the headline it also mentions radio).

For me, living here, "the King" is the most disorienting part of it all. I'm in my 30s and haven't known anything other than "the Queen". My parents are in their 60s and haven't known any different.
"Prime Minister Liz Truss" sending her best wishes to "King Charles III" makes me feel like I'm in a parallel universe, because neither are familiar.
