QUESTION ABOUT 1240-AM

Who is using 1240am these days and from where? I remember when 3 stations shared the frequency. One station (WCRW) went silent about 15 years ago leaving just WEDC and WSBC. It was like that last time in was in Chicago about 4 years ago. Now only one station (WSBC) is listed showing an address on Fullerton. I can see from Google streetview that the old towers ares still up on Belmont (WSBC) and Milwaukee Ave (WEDC).
Just curious as to what is now going on.

Old Chicago

They didn't fold, they were bought out by WSBC. They purchased WCRW in 1995, then in 1996 or 97 they bought out WEDC. When WSBC took over the air time of the other stations, their licenses were deleted, making WSBC a full-time station.

Thanks.

WCRW was absorbed by WSBC on June 17, 1996.
WEDC was absorbed by WSBC on June 13, 1997

During the 3-way time sharing arrangement, WCRW used to broadcast from atop a bulding at 2756 N. Pine Grove in Chicago. WEDC used to broadcast from the tower at Milwaukee Ave and Catalpa Ave. in Chicago and WSBC used the tower at 4949 W. Belmont in Chicgao.

Today WSBC AM 1240 uses the stick at Milwaukee and Catalpa. The tower at 4949 W. Belmont is used these days by WCPT AM 820 during daytime.

Here is a picture of the old WCRW stick at 2756 N. Pine Grove:

How come WSBC didn't stay on their old tower? They use to share it with WSCR when they were on 820. It's certainly not a problem for several stations to share it--or at least it wasn't in the past.

When Wcrw was using the tower at Pine Grove, did it have a better signal downtown than they do now?

At that location did they interfere with Wjob at 1230 am?

Just looking at the distance it looks like wcrw would have a better signal to the south.

The last time I drove thru wcfj was airing gospel programming while wsbc had a spanish language show on.

Considering that Newsweb now has 4 AM stations doing brokered programming as "Access Radio Chicago," they may've ended the WSBC/WCFJ simulcast. (The other two stations are WNDZ/750 and WAIT/850.)

The guy who owns Newsweb passed up a great opportunity several years ago. WJOB was having financial problems and looking for a buyer. Newsweb should have taken it over, and simulcast it with 1240am.

What would have been the price?

Newsweb has 5 AM stations, & they're at the maximum for one band. You forgot that they own 820 WCPT-AM. They can own 1 more FM station in the market before they're at the overall maximum for the Chicago market, which is 8 (WKIF Kankakee & 92.5 WCPY Dekalb aren't in the Chicago market, according to Arbitron)
