QUESTION ABOUT 84 WHAS

I wanted to know when 84 WHAS stopped airing music at night. I live in Chicago and I would listen during the overnights
loud and clear to Joe Donovan, it was one of the last good music- variety shows that aired on a 50KW station. I also liked
what I believe they called there classic hits weekends. If anyone knows when they pulled the music and what happened
to Joe please post it here Thank You.

They stopped it over 10 years ago. They had joe arnold do an overnight show he now does the news on a local station here but i remember listening to him thanksgiving night in 1997 but i can't give you an exact date when they quite doing oldies over night. But they do become a music station one day a year decemeber 25th!!!Can you guess what they play lol So really they are an all music station just not on 364 days.

You might be able to find out about joe donovan on this site www.lkyradio.com

Thanks for the info Hot, also thanks for the link you posted, there was some interesting stuff on there about WHAS. I found
the part about the Chicago cigar shop really funny. I also learned a lot of other things about the station. Imagine what the
signal would be like if they would have got the 500KW license!

They decided "Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell" was SO MUCH BETTER. (Translation: Way cheaper.)

Two stations that have really gone downhill over the years. WHAS i still like mr meiners i was just listening to his interview on www.lkyradio.com.After listening to that interveiw with mr meiners it seems like when ron and terry left WLRS that is when there downfall started and they never could recover. Overnights i wish they would have a local talk show they should do what kabc does in los angeles which is have a ask mr whas out there it was ask mr kabc anything very informative and entertaining. And WLRS which for all intensive purposes does not exist anymore sorry 105.1 does not count!!!

I just read the letter that Barry Bingham Sr sent out to the employees in 1986. If he really cared about them, he would not have sold the stations to Clear Channel.

In 1986 Clear Channel wasn't this evil thing it is now.. that all came after the Jacor merger...I worked for CC Louisville in the mid to late 90's when it was actually a great place to work, that was of course before the Jacor merger which happened in 98/99

Actually WHAS had tried talk overnights. They had a show back in the early 70's that originated from KSL Salt Lake City and returned to music after the show ran its course. Then WHAS briefly picked up Larry King in the early 80's only to return to music with Joe Donovan. The original name was "Rock and Roll Revival". The show was strictly 50's 60's and early 70's. By the late eighties the name "Rock and Roll Revival" was dropped and the music expanded to include some 80's, hard to find of course. The show was almost canceled once in the early 90's in favor of Rush reruns but listeners support kept the show going. Donovan finally hung up the headphones about ten years ago. He was growing tired of the hours and there was the cost of music licensing. Donovan moved to WKJK (Adult Standards at the time) as Ops manager.

WHAS still played music for a couple of more years on a retro countdown show hosted by John Ross. During the last countdown Ross acknowledged the significance of the last music show on WHAS. The final song, "Happy Together" by The Turtles.

I would love to know why clear channel hired cc matthews after he took djx from number 3 to number 6 in the market???Isn't the objective to go lower in ranking not higher???

No, why would I "out" myself on this board?
