Question about 910 WPFB

Classic Country on WPFB

jry.

Classic Country could be a viable format for WPFB 910. They had some success with it before with a terrible network and no local shows.

As far as Jeff taking on WPFB it could be a real nightmare for him. His success has been knowing that he needed to brand it as a Northern Kentucky station.
WPFB must be branded as your Hometown or local station for Middletown, Springboro,, Lebanon and Monroe. You don't brand a station as local with just liners.

WPFB needs to be as local as far as the budget would allow. There has to be at least one and hopefully two local DJs. One would be in morning drive and
one in afternoon drive. The rest of the dayparts might be best served by Westwood One's programing.

I would staff the station with a GM , PD, three sales and a traffic person if the GM can pull a shift too. As I said before, for the fun of it, have run numbers on running the station.
It will never bill a million per year but can turn a good profit for the owner.

The station needs to be at as many events as possible in Middletown, Springboro, Lebanon and Monroe. This would be include live remotes at clients, festivals and other events.
In addition, the GM and Sales staff needs to be part of the Rotary Club, local Chamber of Commerce etc. This will build business connections. Look at the successful AM operations and how this has really work for them.

You have to air as many local high school games as possible and even the city little league championship. With the right formatting and a sales staff trained to sell sports you would not believe the revenue base that can be generated. It can be done

With all this said, Classic country is only one of the two formats I would consider. Classic Country has to be in the music direction of what Jeff's station delivers.
It cannot be another Joe Mullins type station. Believe me has done a great job building his brand but the demo needs to be widen to appeal beyond Middletown..

WNKR had a simulcast deal with WCVG in the early 90s. That was when AM was much more relevant than it is today. There's no good reason to do it again. If they did, they would have to split their UK broadcasts. Music sounds bad, and it doesn't fill in any signal gaps. And even if it did, AM is not going to cut it. WCVG actually does cover the city during the day, meaning city limits. It gets out well to Ronald Reagan Highway, but critical hours are tough. And it's surprisingly strong in Eastgate. Northern KY people are not going to care. The station is pretty much reaching its potential doing Gospel.

I can't see many investors lining up to buy WCVG. Their signal range is too limited.
You need four to five staff members to run it and it would be tough to generate enough revenue to make it attractive to investors.

If it was to have any possible suggest the station would have to air a great deal of northern Kentucky sports and news.
Also be everything in the community at festivals, fairs etc.

The only format that could attract some interest would be Classic Country. The music base would have to be more in line what Joe Mullins is doing than WNKR'S music mix.
There is a hole for a station doing Adult Standards but the above mentioned format I believe would be the best.

I like gr8oldies comments. Like i have said before, my Son in Law is from there. He escaped about a decade and a half ago. It's a mess.

What would i do with it? At this point, zip... It was interesting when we thought we could diplex it from one of our other tower sites. I would MAYBE try another variant of talk, but that is highly doubtful. Another Christian format would make no sense.

Someone could buy CVG and probably run it with 3 people. It would have to be all Northern KY, all the time. Then, my old philosophy would kick in. Listeners, at least the bulk of them, will always gravitate to the larger voice in the adjacent area (especially if that area is a larger pop base). They always want the action from the larger market/voice. If you're in Middletown, i'll bet you're paying more attention to Cincy. If you're in Muskegon, Grand Rapids is more interesting. Maybe it's because the larger market voice has more budget to do a better job.
We have Dish at our place in North Eastern, MI. All of the Alpena and Traverse City stations are on it. We'll watch the stuff from Traverse City. Better coverage, better product.

Questions About 910 WPFB

I always enjoy the comments of jry. It is true that the larger stations and better talent will draw interest from a nearby smaller market.
In Middletown, they lean more towards the Dayton market. WHIO TV is still big in the area for their news coverage and the people in the Middletown and surrounding area follow very closely what the basketball Dayton Flyers do more than Xavier. K99 from Dayton is huge in the area over WUBE.

jry's stations work because he has found a niche. He tried talk but there were too many stations doing talk that it was tough to compete.
WMOH has the same problem with its weak Talk Line up.

WPFB still has a long climb to make it. The owner would have to be patient and have some deep pockets to turn things around.
There are so many people who believe the station is dark. This is what WNKU did to the station. They should have jumped early at any offer to get it off the books.
I think it can become an important part of the market and make money with the right people in place but there are too many question marks to really see someone do something with it.

WCVG would have to operate with three to a max of four people. Use of part time help wherever possible will help in keeping paid benefits down. Two of four would have to be in sales along with the owner/GM.I had some time today and played with the numbers and they are very tight in coming in with a profit. They would have to come in with the right format, do (as jry) suggested a ton of area Northern Kentucky play by play games and area coaches shows. Plus, they need Sunday church programming and stage some NTR events to bring in added revenue.
