Question about AM antennas

I want to have a home made not very expensive antenna for AM. I want to be able to listen to Sports, the problem with my antenna now is that on 550 (KTSA) I get a bad feedback from my digital HD TV tuner. I don't really want to re locate any of the radios or tuner. I did have a cheap speaker wire hooked up and tied it on a screw on the roof that did very well. But I was worried about lightling. I posted this similar question over at the Houston boards, but I wanted more suggestions over here.
Thanks

How far are you from KTSA. JRas ?

What kind of AM radio are you using ?

A few of us made a 4-foot by 4-foot AM loop antenna for a gal who asked if she should spend $90 for one being sold at a local Radio Shack. The one we built her cost $10 and arguably works even better.

There are smaller loops available as well. I found them extremely directional, although not as sensitive.

And running your speaker-wire antenna lenghthwise rather than vertically should give you improved reception. I lived in a basement apartment in Philadelphia and simply used an indoor wire taped to the ceiling the length of the place and got some pretty good DX.

KTSA is about 92 miles from my place. What about hooking on to a screw of the roof? Would that not be safe if I'm worried about lightling? In that area lightling strikes a lot around there for some reason.

Since Steve mentioned loops, what about one of these?

I have one to supplement my daytime AM DXing and it makes a noticeable difference on those stations that are barely audible without it.

Haven't noticed a difference at night, though but I still think it's a good product.

You may be able to get it for less at another seller.

The only thing is, it may magnify the interference but possibly not being that it's very directional depending on which way you turn it.
