i was listening to bill wills (TAM) this morning and they had an interview with tucker carlson.. when bill was introing tucker, they had LOUD music( and from a band i know he doesnt know the name of) playing over his voice, it continued though about 1/3 of the interview... it seemed pretty annoying.. i know that the morning show is big on background music, but it seems like it is OVER produced... are there studies to show that people actually like it? i know the sports talk stations do it to go to commercials, but it is rarely very long, or overly loud....

being an outsider of the radio biz ... i was just wondering..

I had to add a comment after reading this. I listen to Lannigan and Malone in the morning. Around 7:45, they do the IQ Crew IQ Test contest and always have music underneath BUT after they have their winner and Lannigan says, "Congratulations, you're a winner." and then off to a commercial, the music bed is still playing into the commercial and sometimes throughout that entire break. It's really bad when the spots are dry voice reads.

Welcome to the world of WTAM, where EVERYTHING about the station is overproduced...

That I agree. Roger Brown can take pot shots at Brinda for using "dino rock" for bumper music, but it's used appropriatly with little bleed-over into the following sweepers. Romey, obviously, doesn't have that problem.

Personally, I like C2C's use of bumper music - which, thankfully, hasn't changed much at all over the past few weeks.

Oh, and former WEOL/930 AMD host Bill King, being his own board-op, would play :30 sec snippets of a song, then a quick dry fade into the live show. (He referred to the music as coming from "Skitch and the WEOL In-Studio Orchestra" ;)

Didn't mind it that much at all.
