Question about CBS 13 Sacramento

Why does CBS 13 air network programming at 7pm instead of 8pm like the other CBS affiliates in the west coast?

Because they were doing it when they were just an affiliate. Sinclair argued that Sacramento was more of an "early to bed...early to rise" market. When CBS bought the station and it became an O&O, CBS determined that it was to their advantage to continue the earlier prime time.

I thought it was so they could compete with Fox 40's ten o'clock news,Some San Francisco stations tried that a long time ago to compete with KTVU with no success, and have since changed back

That's part of it.

KPIX tried early prime, and KRON (then NBC) followed soon after. That was the problem. There were suddenly 3 stations with 10:00 News. KGO-TV was the only station to benefit because they were left with the only prime-time shows, and the only news at 11:00. On top of that, KRON lost Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune to KGO-TV because they could no longer run the 2 shows in the 7:00 hour. And to top it all off, KPIX and KRON combined only made a slight dent in KTVU's 10:00 news ratings.

In my opinion, hat rationale that the Bay Area was an "early to bed" area was just BS - people don't go to bed earlier here than in any other populous spread-out metro area.

To me, its confusing. Having an early prime time 7-10p instead of 8-11p in Sacramento will make me missed some of the programs. Such as CSI:Miami. If I were in Portland OR, Seattle, WA, or Los Angeles. I will know that it airs on Mon/10-11p instead of 9-10p. Also, being in the Pacific Time Zone. You get used to 8-11p Prime Time instead of 7-10p.

Well also consider this, KOVR's 10 PM news is always beating KTXL's 10 PM news (though it does compete very well during the sweeps) and defeintely ousts KQCA's 10 PM KCRA-blank produced news. Another thing to benefit is KOVR wants to avoid KCRA's direct competition with their highly rated 11 PM news which IMO is being too overproduced and overworked. I watch KOVR and KXTV's news because at least they report other things to an advantage besides bragging about how they are #1 and Where The News Comes First being overplayed. KOVR's slogan is just plain and simple, "Asking Questions, Getting Answers", it makes more sense.

Didn't KCRA 3 try the 7-10 Network prime time for a while? Seems to me they did it ,but only for a short time.

Yes, from 1991-93. In 1993, KCRA acquired then KSCH-58 via LMA, then did a 10:00 News. Then KCRA abandoned the early prime time programming. I always thought the main purpose was to compete against KTXL's prime time news.

I have another question on CBS 13 as well as its sister station, CW 31. Why aren't both stations running a secondary channel (or channels) like KCRA, KXTV and KQCA?

Last time I checked, other CBS-owned stations don't use their subchannels...

Correction, December 1994 was when KSCH (KQCA) was purchased by KCRA, not 1993. Around that time, KSCH became KQCA and in the interim picked up UPN programming before it switched to WB in 1998 and MNTV in 2006.

One of them should do RTV in Sacramento, KAIL 7 a MNTV in Fresno is running RTV on 7.2 and they carry the SF Giants on 7.2, KAIL 7 used to be on 53 analog, and was given channel 7 for digital so they decided to map out on 7 as their vitual channel instead of 53, IMO RTV is better than TV Land ,great classic shows. KMPH is now a THIS TV affiliiate on 26.2 as well..

Actually the KAIL 7 signal is avaliable up to Stockton with a good antenna according to tvfool.com

I also believe that most of the Fresno stations that transmit up at Auberry Mounain can be picked up to Stockton as well besides KAIL. I know KSBW out of Salinas works well with an Outdoor rooftop antenna.

Very true, KSEE (NBC)24 Moved up to Meadow Lakes (Above Auberry) last year, making almost all Fresno stations transmitting from there except KVPT (PBS) 18 and KMPH (FOX) 26.
KSBW 8 can be picked up in the valley,Fresno to north. I used to get KNTV 11 when they were on Loma Prieta.

DTV on VHF High? I thought DTV on High VHF the reception is horrible compare to DTV on UHF. A lot of TV stations preferred DTV on UHF instead of VHF.

I stand corrected. Actually, when KCRA abandoned their early prime time in 1993, KCRA did produce a 10:00 News for KSCH. I think KCRA bought the time slot. A little over a year later, KCRA did purchase KSCH.

I can't pick them up but since I use a Rabbit ear antenna, that is why.

A Suggestion For KTXL 40.2

If I was management of KTXL, I would use the newly vacated spot on 40.2 for a combination of RTV & Local Programming. Call it "Retro TV 40". Revive the old KTXL logo. Use some of the RTV programming. Add some Prime Time Movies. Maybe add some Morning Kiddie Programming. Revive the good old days of KTXL when it was a highly rated Independent TV Station in the 1970's & Early 1980's.

They should, KTXL was on my cable system, same with KTVU in the 70s and 80s and was dropped when KMPH became FOX, I rememeber The all night movies with Tom Labre, water beds.Retro TV needs to be on in the Sacramento/ Stockton/Modesto market and in San Francisco.
