Question about Dave Robert's garden

Dave Robert's Garden is of course the name given for the outside on City Line Ave shot for weather reports. I don't know if its always been called that, but atleast in recent years.

Anyway I just realized that with the move into the new Studio coming, it will mean the end of the live shots outside pvi, along City line Ave. The New building looks to be featuring a skydeck much like CBS3, which will no doubt have the city skyline visible in the background.

I was thinking, as far back as I can remember they have been doing live shots at that spot on City Line Ave (youtube vids back in the early 80's show it too), and I was wondering if anyone knows when they first started to do that? Was it when action news debuted? Did Dave Roberts start it, and ect?

Also does anyone remember any memorable events happening while doing a live shot? Has a car accident ever happened. Or has anyone tried to climb up the wall for example? Not that it would be smart. The times i've driven by they always had a big security guard off camera ready to kick arse, but still some things have happen.

Anyway for me, I remember one time during a big snowstorm, someone threw a snowball at Dave Roberts, and it ended up being Marc Howard, who came into the shot a minute later laughing. I also remember a utility worker, working on the light pole right behind the live shot spot once making vulgar gestures at Cecily Tynan. It was kinda funny, and she had to see it, because they have monitor there. I wonder if she cursed him out after the cam went off. Anyway if you have anything share.

I remember reading that the new studio will include those outside decks for most of the live shots, so they won't be in the same position.

The concept of "the weather outside" as a regular feature for them came with the expansion of Action News to 5 p.m.

Memorable? The most memorable thing I recall was when the morning edition of Action News was done entirely from outside during a nasty ice storm in the early '90s. Something about them being so shorthanded they did it that way.

That makes sense. i should've figured it was when they expanded to 5:00PM. So "the weather outside", is that what it was called when they first started?

Also, another thing I remember, but I don't think this was from Action News. I think it was from AM Philadelphia, but I remember Dave Roberts was swinging from one of the trees on a rope for a segment, and crashed into another tree. Can't say much more, as I was a child when this happened.

Yes, they called it the weather outside formally, as distinguished from the 5:30 weather update, done from the studio.

I would hope that they keep it there. Channel 6 doesn't change stuff. All that they have to do is run wires into the new bldg. Most of the time, they don't even refer to the station as 6ABC during the newscast. It is still called the Channel 6 Action News.

Would be pretty far walk for those tight time spots (just 6 minutes) in the morning. I could see David Murphy out of breath by the end of a newscast from running back and forth. Besides, old wpvi will be under major renovations, and technically the building nor the land along city line will nolonger be owned by wpvi, although if they asked I'm sure they could still use the live shot spot..

I will miss the honkers (the polite ones, not the ones who continuously honked the entire time they were stuck at that spot) Dave Roberts acknowledging the honkers, and the general alive sound. The new skydeck isn't ground level and has a target parking lot behind it. While it might provide the philly skyline view in the distance, the background sound will be silence.

Channel 6 isn't going to still own the land that the new parking garage is on? Just use the spot along City Ave. for the 5pm news.
