Question about Family Radio on 950 AM

The WKDN calls are currently parked at Family Radio's 88.3 in State College PA ..
They already announced that the calls will move to 950 ..

Back to the Philly market where they (evidently) belong...

or at least close to Camden which 'KDN' was a play on when they first appeared on Camden's WKDN 800 and 106.9.

I passed by the the old WKDN Studios on Friday and the WKDN Call letter sign is still there and the Satellite dishes are still on the roof maybe 950 will broadcast from the MT Ephraim Ave location.

Since Family owns WKDN (FM) and will own 950 in Philadelphia, it can have both the WKDN (AM) calls on 950 and the WKDN-FM calls in State College--if that is how they would like it. I'd say that adding the -FM suffix to the State College calls would be less than half of a call-sign change. Very few listeners would even notice.

This was taken directly from a special announcement from Harold Camping, Prez of Family Radio (I can't believe they've allowed him to still be leading their radio network). Below is what he said about Philly.

For those living in and around Philadelphia, we are pleased to announce that Family Radio will be heard again in Philadelphia -- at 950 AM on the new WKDN-AM! We praise God for His wonderful answer to our prayer!

He also mentions that they've sold WFME their most powerful signal, they plan to go off the air there by the end of the year as they look for a suitable station to use in that market (think far cheaper AM station in that market).

They apparently don't keep their station locator up to date as : WXFR (not WKDN) is listed State College 88.3 FM

The FCC granted the sale of 950 to Family Radio this past week, so the switch should happen any day now ..

Maybe it'll be AM 620? That would put them right next to WMCA (570).

That would seem to be a possibility signal for FR. The down side is that 620's signal in NJ, WFME's old home turf, is horrible. Both their day and night signals could be described in NJ as "All Nulls All the Time." The 3000 watt day signal would also be a bit limiting, not pushing a "big punch" into some parts of the city. That being said, it may be the best of signals that might be available. Most others would be even worse, such as WWRL and other under performing AMs.

WEPN would be ideal, but I can't see ESPN parting with it, now that they have an outlet for their Spanish Sports programming. WADO would also be a good choice, but with more than a 1 share doing Spanish Talk, I don't see that happening.

Looking at FR's acquisition in Philly, 950 has one of the market's better signals since Greater Media completed all of the upgrades; and in Christian radio, coverage is almost everything. I imagine FR is also going to go for the best signal they can get in NYC.

WLIB/1190 is also a decent AM signal. I'd take that over 620 any day. I'd be surprised to see any of the big sticks sell.

I didn't think of WLIB...good thought. But, is it available? I haven't heard anything about its status since the whole Inner City financial debacle.

What about 930, 1380, or 1430. I don't know how 1430's signal behaves in the real world, but the upgraded signal from the 930 site (10 kW-D/7 kW-N, four towers day and night) certainly looks decent on paper. WPAT's top-loaded towers are electrically 225 degrees at 1430. Both 1430 and 1380 have low NIFs. And 1380 with its nighttime upgrade to 13 kW looks like a very good nighttime signal in the five boroughs. 930, which, due to the lower frequency, has the best daytime signal of the three, often gets reamed at night by 930 in Buffalo.

Anything is possible, I suppose. But I'd be surprised if Multicultural sold any of their AM stations. They are all brokered, and from what I can tell, they have pretty full dance cards. The most likely candidates to me seem like WLIB/1190, WWRL/1600, and WSNR/620. AM 620 is on the block. The other two have struggled quite a bit.
