Question about getting PSA's aired - any help appreciated!

Hi everyone,
I work at a local non-profit organization and would like to get some PSA's on the air. We have some PSA's that we have recorded but I was wondering if the group could give me advice regarding the best way to proceed with this task. I originally looked at getting support from the Ad Council for this purpose but they were quite expensive (thousands of dollars).

I am particularly interested in getting our PSA's played on hip-hop, jazz, latino, and rock/alternative stations. Would it be more effective for me to contact local stations individually (PD perhaps?) or the radio companies (Infinity, CBS, Cox, CC, Cumulus, etc) headquarters?

Any other suggestions regarding ways to effectively get our PSA on the air are appreciated.

Thanks!
Dave

There is no one answer. Let me give you a few points.

Each station locally makes a decision on what PSAs and how many to run. So your best contact is at the station level, probably PD if they do not have some kind of PR/Community affairs person.

Many stations do not want to run generic recorded PSAs. They want the live talent to read them in the staiton style. So make "suggested" copy also available. And remeber that some stations just want to bring something to listeners' attention, nor read a book... so do a 10" and a 15" version.

Don't try to sound to "hip" if you are not of the lifestyle yourself. If the copy has "dude" or "dogg" in it, it probably is not right.

Latino stations (meaning ones in Spanish) have a wide variety of formats, and the pSA that fits KOVE does not fit KLTN. And remeber that the copy should be checked by a literate native Mexican Spanish speaker for anywhere in the Southwest.

Stations will pick PSAs that fit the lifestyle. An 18-34 station will not run PSAs abut Social Security, for example, as it is irrelvant at that age.

Write for the needs of the listener, not for the needs of your organization.

I hope this is at least a tiny help.

Yes that does help, thank you very much. If you (or anyone else) has any additional suggestions, please let me know.

Thank you again,
Dave
