Question about Hot 106/160.3 FM

I don't know the history of the station, so forgive me...

But, if 106.3 was a local Northern RI/Southeastern Massachusetts station focusing on Woonsocket and Milford, could it succeed?

I'd have to imagine it'd do better then it is now, trying to be a Providence station

Re: WINK-FM

Paul, From what I understand and I;m sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. In the early 80's possibly the late 70's. 106.3 FM was WINK FM. Playing AC. then someone had a brainstorm and as a trial became KICKS 106 around 86, 87 area playing Hip Hop. It became popular and the rest is history.

It's not doing that badly, given that it's a Class A with limited coverage, especially in the fringes of the Boston market where it collides with New Hampshire's WFNQ 106.3. Milford and Woonsocket aren't much of a DMA for such a station to cover, to my knowledge these two communities have relatively nothing in common other than receiving a good signal of WWKX. And Milford already has 1490 WMRC filling the local niche.

But speaking of reallocating stations to different markets, I'd love to see CC use 93.3 as a Boston rimshot; not sure if the stick could move any further north without complaints from WMKK. Or what about the two 106.3s together as a Boston rimshot? Although these will probably never happen, I'd venture they could make at least a dent in the books... look at the ratings WFNQ is getting, branding itself as an NH station, in the Boston market.

106.3 originally was WWON-FM, sister to what is now WOON-1240. They were mono originally and ran 390 watts power. And, yes, later on, they took on the call WNCK, Wink 106.
