Question about KILT FM and HD

Anyone know why they kill the HD signal during the Texans games? Irritating!

Also noticed the HD2 is now saying Kickass Country is back, using the KIKK calls. When did that start?

The IBOC HD signal includes an 8-10 second buffer, to correct for errors in the digital stream. It is likely the station shuts it off so that anyone inside the stadium hears a "live" play-by-play on their portable radios (of course they could also get around this by having a low power FM rebroadcast inside the stadium, which is done at a number of venues.)

However, if the HD is turned off to enable TV viewers to listen to the game on the radio with the TV sound turned down, it's a futile effort. There are various digital delays in the TV broadcast, which can vary depending on provider, and are also present OTA.

Well, CBS still controls the KIKK call through its ownership of 650AM, so they can use them as branding on the HD2...just not as a legal ID there.

Not exactly sure. I first noticed it in November IIRC.

What teams/stadiums have found a way to broadcast a low power signal so the fans can hear the play by play?
I googled and found nothing about it, seems it would have to be so low power it would be useless to bother with.

The Columbus Blue Jackets did it at one time (and still might). The night signal of their AM flagship and regular signal of the FM were not powerful enough to make it inside the arena at night. Their new FM flagship is heard easily inside the arena.
The Astros and Rockets ought to consider it. 740 probably can be heard inside Minute Maid Park, but I can't see 610's signal being good enough to make it inside Toyota Center.

A couple of examples where low-power FM is used are in Dallas' American Airlines Center (97.5) and at the Superdome in New Orleans (105.3).

Hemm, I the only legal 97.5 I see in Dallas is a translator out at cedar hill. I guess they are doing this with Part 15 gear at the AAC.
