Question about KTRH

I have always wondered and no one has ever talked about it
in this group. Years ago the transmitter for KRTH was located
near Baytown. It was moved to Dayton/Liberty. Why did they do this,
and couldn’t they find a site closer to Houston. I really would hate
to be their C.E. and drive all of that distance when the XMTR goes down.

Good facilities operated by good engineers don't go down very often. Plus many things can be performed remotely.

As to why they moved, it is likely because they felt moving much further north gave the the best opportunity to cover the growing market using a directional antenna.

KTRH is by a country mile the best AM in Houston, but even then it is less than great in the far northern portions of the market at night. Houston is just a city, among many others, who has outgrown AM radio.

The original site for KTRH was in Pasadena; on the edge of the Tilford Jones ranch. It is the present day home of KXYZ. I think the power was 5 kW, on 1360, at that site; which was shared with KPRC. The move to Baytown facilitated a power increase to 50 kW, on 740, a Canadian clear channel. The site used self-supporting towers. The transmitter was a 50 kW RCA that occupied about three rooms. There were apartment rooms, upstairs, for a staff of three engineers; and they had a full-time cook on-staff. There was also a garage attached to the building.

The present, more modern site was constructed in about 1980 near Dayton. The old building, out near the racetrack, was sold to a trucking company in about 1984.
