Question about Mix 104.1

Is WWBX's target audience 25-54 Females? If so, how have they been doing in that demographic lately?

It also seems that if Mix 104.1 tweaked their format when they dumped AMP Radio for Big 103 instead.

Truthfully, I fell out of touch with their music 2 years ago, and I do know that any current music format will continue to move on. However, in the year 2019, the station became completely unlistenable to me. True, I never was in their demo, but a station that I have been loyal to since the early to mid nineties, it is an end to an era! I have them a good 25 plus years!

Using an average of 3 months prior to the holiday period, they have been #2 in 18-34 and 25-54 women. They are only beaten in 25-54 by WXKS, which also outbills them by about double.

They must have a very small male audience since so many men keep sending roses to their girlfriend instead of their wife when their cell phone company tells them they won free roses and can send them to whoever they want.

Even with a small male audience you would think that word would have gotten out by now to send the roses to your wife. Weird huh?

Huh for sure! What are you talking about?

(WWBX is 3rd in 25-34 men, and top 10 in 25-54 men, even though that is not their target)

Not sure if you are being sarcastic, but if not, Mix 104 has been doing the War of the Roses bit for years.

They have decent ratings among men, yet men keep failing for the prank?! It’s almost as if it’s not real!

OK, since the question was about ratings and I'm not a listener, the humor fell flat on me. Now I get it. (y)

Remember, that station likely cumes less than 1 man in 20 among 25-54, so part of the joke is that those men don't know! It's sort of like an ethical speed trap.

I just keep wondering if it is all just an act, as teachnically you cannot air a call without the persons permission.

If the station originates the call, yes, it needs permission. Inbound calls have a tacit permission if it is clear that the call is to a radio station or radio show.

Most of those prank call bits on radio are staged, and not real. In other words, just like the bits on SNL.

Yes, that is what I thought. I have watched radio segments featuring Scott Shannon (New York) and seeing that some of the so-called on the road segments are actually being done from inside the studio also.

Public radio's Whad Ya Know comedy-quiz show ran for 30 years or so and had a Town of the Week segment saluting a spot in the US.They would call someone in this town at random and
ask the person about interesting things in the place. They did tell them they were on the radio
at the start but should have checked with the caller beforehand to be sure it was OK. One
week I heard them say oops, we've been told we
have to check with the person off the air to
let them know and ask if it's ok. From then on
a staffer would make the call just beforehand.
For their effort, the person they called got a prize.

The quiz segments of course had contestants
calling in, knowing they'd be on, and would
be partnered with an audience member.

I remember that show, it was fun!

I am not at all surprised by this. Kiss 108 (WXKS-FM) to be sure, has run various carnations of Top 40, at least as far back as 1981. I believe that they were all disco before that. They have always used the "Kiss 108" handle since its inception. Most stations, even if their call letters remain the same, will update or change their handle from time to time. I think that adjacent market CHR WPRO-FM (92 Pro FM) has been doing it longer, if only because they started up to 3 years before Kiss 108 launched.

I don’t think War of the Roses and other skits using actors is the same as a scripted TV show, movie etc. The vast majority of fictional entertainment is clearly known to be fictional by the audience and also the “actors” are not pretending to be their authentic selves like a morning show host playing along with a scripted bit does.

While a certain level of embellishment and acting is to be expected on the radio, a regular bit which is clearly fake being passed off as real means everything on the show has no credibility. Go to the Mix website and you will see the morning show page proclaiming how open and honest the hosts are about their lives. So when does the honesty start and the lies stop? It’s all very dishonest no matter how it’s spun to rationalize it.

I do not know, just for the record, @KarsonWithaK does occasionally post in here. I do not know if is proper etiquette to ask about the validity of the callers or not?

I think it’s been well established that the callers are actors. I didn’t bring this up just to attack Mix 104.1 or the morning show hosts specifically. They need to do what they need to do to get ratings and clearly they have had success based on the longevity of their show. The wider question is whether these types of bits are really a good thing for radio. In a world where anyone can easily find out that the bits are fake, why do them? It seems like they just assume their audience is too apathetic to even look into it, which says something bad about the actual engagement of their listeners. There is something shady about promoting a show where the hosts are being “real” about themselves, then without warning jumping into a fake world without telling the audience.

Which ultimately takes the fun out of the whole thing to start with. :/
