Question about MUST CARRY

I thought when local full time stations can call a cable compay and demand to be carried. That's what I thought.

Now, Lin wanting 140 % or whatever for COX,Dish etc to retransmit there signal.

Now, for example Could Cox make an agreement to carry WBZ and WFXT out of Boston in Rhode Island at a fraction of what LIN wants and tell them to go pound sand.
What it sounds to me is. Lin can say you must carry carry WPRI and WNAC in Rhode Island and you're going to pay through the nose for it too. It doe'nt sound to fair to me.

If its about the money Why not just carry an affiate out of Boise Idaho(for example) at little to no cost.

Must carry means for free. If a station chooses "must carry" it forces the cable company to carry them but then they don't get compo for it.

If a station chooses to get compensated the cable company can decline.

The cable company, in general, cannot import stations from outside their DMA (Designated Market Area). So in that case if the station owners want compensation and the cable company declines, the station won't be carried and its subscribers won't see it on cable.

Compensation doesn't alway mean money though. For instance a station can negotiate for a desired channel. Or let's say the station was owned by FOX. It could say, in order to get our FOX affiliate you must also carry all the cable channels that FOX owns as well.

But.... IF COX in this instance wanted to pick up WBZ and WFXT. I believe they could if no deal can be made with LIN. Alot of cable companies do carry two affiates for the same network in a market that over laps.

There are exceptions but generally an affiliate in a market can require that they have exclusive rights to their DMA.

Historical reasons such as significantly viewed allow for multiple networks in tight areas like Boston/Providence and DC/Baltimore

In recent months, importation of distant signals was done because of paperwork that was not done correctly, so it was allowed.
