Question about NBC 4 (woai)

I noticed recently that channel 4 news is using both "News 4 WOAI" and "News 4 San Antonio." are they experimenting with something, or phasing in changes in their branding? Sign of more changes to come? Anybody know anything?

I wish they had a new logo though. My ideal logo for channel 4 is the NBC peacock with the old "4" for
the 1980s-1993. :(

They're going back to News 4 San Antonio and are phasing it in. New owner (Sinclair) wants to distance the station from Clear Channel's (old owner) WOAI-AM.

Getting back to the radio topic of this board-- Clear Channel had been going for that synergy thing between it's news/talk WOAI radio and the TV news. Now that the two have split ownership, News 4 is going in its own direction.

Univision's KGBT AM/FM down in the valley has this same identity crisis where it has the same call letters as the local CBS TV affiliate but they have not be co-owned in decades.

Clear Channel sold woai tv in 2007 to providence equity partners. Since then, the owners of woai tv have been paying clear channel to use the call letters and to share the website. Ccsa ownes "woai."

Woai tv was recently bought by Sinclair, and it's likely they're hacking and slashing. Why sink money into a 5th or 6th place tv station that gets beaten by Spanish language stations? (Yes, that's what's happening now and has been for a while now)

I've been told they'll probably switch back to kmol.

Id hope so. I miss growing up with the old KMOL.

The old KMOL calls are down in Victoria now on NBC 17 KMOL-LD.

Apparently there was a WOAI-FM before the one mentioned in the previous post according to this Wikipedia entry:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WOAI_(AM)

In the late 70's, 1200 WOAI phased out music programming. In 1979, KEEZ became WOAI-FM (not the original WOAI-FM) until the birth of Country Music station KAJA-FM "KJ*97" in 1981.

1978-1981 exactly but I don't think it was news/talk on the FM side. If I recall wasn't it a Top 40 station then Country KAJA?

KEEZ 97.3 was, at least at the end of its tenure, what would eventually be called "Rock 40." I always remember WOAI-FM 97.3 as beautiful music/easy listening. That's what I remember giving way to country KAJA. Of course, that's just what I remember, and I was pretty young at that time. So, I wasn't nearly as into radio as I became about five years later, and my memory isn't as good as it used to be!

I have the same memory issue as you do...but I do remember Top 40 KEEZ (ROCK 97 KEEZ) and then KAJA coming after that...dont recall WOAI on this frequency at all..

The 1980 Broadcasting Yearbook lists WOAI-FM as Beautiful Music which would explain why you don't remember it. Not your cup of tea in 1980.

There were three major players in the Beautiful Music format at the time. Schulke, Bonneville and The FM 100 Plan. Schulke was the jugernaut. IIRC-- KQXT was their SA affiliate. Not sure what the other SA stations carried.

KMOL-TV (or just plain KMOL) and KMOL-LD are two different callsigns. So at least as far as the FCC is concerned, the San Antonio station could flip to KMOL-TV without anything changing in Victoria.
