Question about network reruns

Of course both now and in the past, most summer or holiday reruns of network shows are from the previous season. But I have a vague memory that in the past (say pre-1990) that reruns could also be from previous seasons too. Am I right? How far back did networks go for their rerun episodes?

How far back a network could go for a repeat episode would likely depend primarily on two things: The licensing agreement the network has with the company that produced the show and whether or not older episodes/seasons are already in syndication.

For example, when Golden Girls was syndicated on US broadcast stations between 1990 and 1997,
it was on these stations.
