Question about News/Talk 850 WFTL

As to no more Jamaican AM, I believe that....last thing there was, was Nationwide Radio, which I think all moved to the 90MHz area FM. Jamaica is like the UK in that they use areas on the dial to reserve for one network.

You'll know when the next PPM book comes out for November. Remember, all the publicity for the station and Joyce happened in November. I predict a very slight increase in WPB and in MIA. But by December, it will be all gone and they will be back to .2 or .3

In the Miami book, the station had the same 0.3 in 12+ and 0.2 in 25-54 it has averaged for months and months. Remember, the November book ended 11/10, though.

I would agree with you, but how do you explain how the top 5 stations in Miami in the new PPM world (6+) are all English speaking? If you go by cume, the top 7 rated stations are all English speaking. So the "latino" argument doesn't fly in this case.

In 25-54, which is about all that matters, there are 5 Spanish language stations in the top 12, and of the remaing 7, 5 have 50% Hispanic cume bases or more, with WMIA over 60% Hispanic.

Keep in mind that stations that play some or all English language songs are among the most popular across Latin America. Unlike talk formats, it's not necessary to understand English to enjoy English language music... whether it is AC, rock, rhythmic or pop.

Although AM 850 has an impressive 50kw signal, it still is not a full market station covering all of Miami-Dade.

Which means it covers English-speaking areas just fine!

That's not enough to make the station "work" in the total market. And, just FYI, Miami Dade has a significan percentage of the non-Hispanic population in the market.

But you're talking about music stations.... and music is much more "language agnostic" than talk.

The programming on WIOD and WFTL sucks. Public radio's WLRN has better numbers than the commercial talk stations!

Yeah.... I wish we had a good, local, talk station... a la WWL-AM in New Orleans. Now THAT's a great station!

I happened to visit the area a couple of days last week on business. Listened to morning drive and golly the on-air people seemed so happy, so chipper, so co-operative among themselves, sounded like they enjoyed being there! I just can't seem to figure out why that is! Mr. Sheridan, you're an expert in such things. Have any ideas?

I'm not the resident expert, but I would imagine the reason the morning crew sounds so happy is because they ARE happy ;) As for why, just look at where they are in sunny, beautiful South Florida which speaks for itself :)

Nope, I'd just be guessing really.
