question about radio (in general)

What's the average library of music at a station? Is it 250 songs or 500 songs?
and do they use a propriety format or just mp3s or .wavs?

I saw a radio station up in Utica, NY (WLZW) and they had dual CD players that I never saw before when the CD was in a case and was loaded into a player. (back in 199X)

I can't (won't) answer the programming question, but I can tell you those were probably Denon CD players.

The bottom of the case opens when inserted. The disk spins inside the case.

The cases were held closed by two small screws that prevented the disk from being removed.

It was a good idea at the time. We still have one in a production studio for the sound effects library.

i was told some have 250 and some have 500 tracks.
classic rock stations (those who don't rely on good old jones) have about 700
is this true?

I wonder if the afternoon KROCK (WKRN) show has to bring in their music to play?

I can (and will) answer your question. Depending on the format this number can be in the range of 200 to 450 songs. It depends on the company and their particular guidelines. Not all of the songs rotate evenly. Some are certainly played more often than others. Current music formats usually have shorter playlists while gold based formats are the longer lists. Normally, all of the music and recorded material (spots, promos, jingles) are on a server and on-air people (those that are left) let the computer do the segues and they just jump in at the appropriate times. There's very little physical work to do in an air studio anymore.

The "CD carts" you mentioned were convenient but they did malfunction quite a bit. The players were also troublesome and needed a lot of attention to keep them running right. Of course, if you're playing everything off of a server and it goes down....now THAT'S trouble!

The format relies on the station. WRKN uses a combination of CD's and a proprietary format to the automation a .daf (digital audio file), only used on Maestro systems.

The decision was made to give TJ great latitude with his show in the afternoon, and he worked in some decent to good quality MP3's from time to time (more rare stuff).

However, there isn't a local show in the afternoons any more, as TJ's gone on to other things. That's not to say that it won't be local again in select dayparts.

Refer to the VT thread to see the type of cost/billing analysis that we have to go through when considering programming staff when Jones is doing an adequate job of selecting the music.

We are on WAVE format now (SIMIAN)...did the DENON CD/Carts back in the 90's with SPOTS only on Computer...it was a great invention for sure!(Had a lot of beat up CD's prior to the CD/CART Machine.)

I work at a Country Station (not Jacksonville)...As far as Station Libraries....VERY WEAK...WAY TOO SMALL...TOO MUCH REPEATS ESPECIALLY OLDIES.This is why listeners are turning off RADIO.RADIO needs to start thinking outside the box & toss the OLD IDEAS that no longer work!!!

ROB FM. coming to a Clear Channel cluster near you. Charlie, you gonna upgrade the signal for this monster station?
;D

I used to work with a station that has a library (and I am not kidding) with a 1,800 song library. It is a Jack format and has done very well in this area.

And if there is anyone hiring in Jax, let me know. I am moving there in three weeks. ;D

heh heh heh.
"take Rob for a ride.. he plays everything"

RE:KRN
just as i thought.
too bad about WKRN. I actually enjoyed it.

I'm wondering due to the "new" format of WAVE how long it will take to get in the ratings swing of things.
With them off the air more then on :( , it's hard.

The thing about WAVE they play everything but I'm still seeing the focus on classical rock.
(their roots)
If they wanted to (ohh Dan) they could do 70's through 90's weekends instead of having just COAST do the same old 80's songs every fri through sun evening at midnight.

Would be a nice variety of programmes to enjoy every weekend.
