Question About Radio/TV Past....

I have a totally useless trivia question that I wondering if anyone could help me out on. For some reason, got to thinking about this while thumbing through my "Tourney Time" book, today....I was very young when channel 6 aired the semi-state and state finals basketball games, and as I recall, Tom Carnegie did play-by-play, along with Tony Hinkle. But didn't WIBC's Gary Todd do some kind of scoreboard show, as well? I seem to recall him doing one at halftime and after the games, I think Indiana Bell was the sponsor.

Thanks for your help.

sorry maybe i dont go back that far....but i remember hilliard gates and later i think a guy named barnette, who now does stuff for espn plus, running the studio and halftime show.

I'm not sure if Gary Todd was one of the announcers, but I do know Carnegie and Hinkle would throw it back to the studios for scores and most of the time this was either Lou Sherman or Howdy Bell. Herb Schwomeyer (sic) "Hoosier Hysteria Historian" also helped out with the telecast on Channel 6. Pretty much Indiana Bell was the main sponsor of everything. I recently saw a tape of the 1972 semistate and between quarters and timeouts, a ticker ran at either the top or bottom of the screen reminding you to let your fingers do the walking through the Indiana Bell Yellow Pages.

There were also several others that went around Hinkle Fieldhouse doing various interviews with dignitaries and the like throughout the telecast. The contract moved to Channel 4 in 1978 and Hilliard Gates did the pbp and then in 1979 Jerry Baker took over the pbp duties and Gates joined him and Butler coach Joe Sexson. State senator Tom Hession took over for Sexson and that trio did the games until 1993. In 1994, Channel 23 had the games with Vince Welch and Big Mac George McGinnis doing the broadcast. Channel 40 has had the IHSAA contract for several years now with Baker and host of others doing the games.

Thanks for the info. Howdy Bell may be who I'm actually thinking of, and forgot completely about Lou Sherman (wasn't he on 500 radio broadcasts too?). I remember Hilliard Gates, too, not only on the telecasts, but also on the tourney draw show, I think it was him, Joe Pate, Jerry Baker, and I think someone (who's name escapes me) from the Terre Haute/Evansville areas, as well. I had forgotten about Joe Sexson, too.
