Question About Sports Rights

Was interesting to learn of sports rights issues from JJ's thread about KXLY. Does anyone know (assuming regular season stuff here) if there is anything that prevents a game from being carried on both AM & FM by the same owner? In other words, if KIRO wanted to run Seahawks on one of Entercom's FM's at the same time (not saying they WOULD -- just theoretical question here) --- is that scenario permissible? Seems the franchise would only benefit MORE if that happened so can't see they would frown on it. Owners might benefit from a simulcast and THEY would probably not frown on it -- but yet I'm not sure I have ever seen that (at least not in large markets).

A clueless mind is waiting to be enlightened....!!

I might be wrong, but I do beleive that KIRO has ran The Seahawks games on both AM & FM in years past.

There was a time a few years ago that Entercom aired the Hawks on both KIRO and KISW (or maybe it was KQBZ??). The intention at that time was to air them exclusively on KISW the following year. But then Entercom lost the Mariners to Fisher and they decided to leave the Hawks only on KIRO. Sports rights are normally granted per stations vs per cluster.

Depends on the team, and what organization holds the rights (team, league, or syndicator)...
For instance, the NHL Phoenix Coyotes have their home games simulcast on Sandusky's 1060 KDUS and 93.3 KDKB, mainly because the AM has 500 directional watts at night that don't penetrate the Glendale Arena 20 miles away...therefore the boost in coverage on the FM. What's notable here is all pre-pregame (yes, that's two "pre-"s in there) and postgame call-in stuff is AM only, while the FM goes back to their AOR format. Road games are usually broadcast on AM only.

The only other AM-FM arrangement I've heard was a few years ago with the NFL Cardinals...Their games were on FM only (KSLX), but also had a Spanish-language broadcast on a sister AM...

Again, there's no hard-and-fast rule. It depends on the rights-holder, the market, and what is negotiated...

I can see airing the Super Bowl game itself on say, KISW (or any one of Entercom's FMs), but not an entire NFL season - it just clashes with any music intensive station IMHO.

The Steelers games are Broadcast in Simulcast on WBGG/WDVE, The Bengels are on WSAI/WOFX and after the Reds are done for the Season in a Trimulcast with WLW added, The Browns are on WMMS and Add WTAM after the Indians are done for the Season, The Colts are on WFBQ (When WFBQ had the rights once in the early 90's they were also simulcasted on WNDE with WNDE being the actual flagship covering Pre and Post Game Stuff only, when WIBC had its 2nd run as Colts as its Flagship simulcasted night games on then WNAP), the Rams have an AM/FM simulcast between 2 different Owners in KLOU (Clear Channel) and KTRS (just recently bought by the St Louis Cardinals so i think the KTRS part of the broadcast wont happen next year at least in september and maybe october for sure due to Cardinals moving to KTRS from KMOX. More often than not these days a lot of NFL Teams have FM Flagships with either outright FM Broadcasts only or an FM/AM Simulcast or in the case of some teams FM/AM/AM Trimulcast.

You'd get some hearty disagreement from St. Louis (KLOU-FM) and Buffalo (WGRF-FM) - just a couple of music stations (and very successful ones at that) that are also NFL flagships. They don't think football clashes at all with their formats - in fact, it augments their listenership.

Add Indianapolis (WFBQ-FM), Tennessee (WKDF-FM)

I guess I'm just a puritan when it comes to music stations. The only times when sports like football get my attention is around Super Bowl time (and mostly as an excuse to eat pizza and drink beer in the living room without being struck down by the Goddess of the house.)

But I guess demographically, sports can fit right in with an active rocker. I like active rock, I'm just not a huge sports fan...

The Cardinals are now on Bonneville's 620 KTAR, but are also heard on 100kW KPKX, despite KTAR having an excellent low frequency 5kW signal covering much of the state.
