QUESTION ABOUT THE KTRH XMTR

Some in this group know quite a bit about Houston radio and it's history and tower locations. I have alway wondered why did KTRH put its transmitter so far away from town. I heard it was once closer in near I-10 at one time, but someone gave them a
LOT of money for the land which now has apartments on it. I know it is multi-tower and 50-KW, but couldn't they find something closer to town. I would hate to be
the C.E. and have to drive way out there when something happened.

you just cant move your towers and tx to anywhere you want cause you want to sell the land its under. moving 50 kw is like moving a 1000 piece puzzle and not expecting that all those pieces are going to be safe in its place.

most likely, if you had to move some towers, you need approval from fcc after you submitt your plans, all the AM specialist readings and their consulting and tests and proofs and more and more anylyzing would cost tons of money. those am consultants make a huge amounts to come in and work and tune your am station for days, weeks, and even months and the pay, yikes hundreds and the guy we use is thousands a day!

anyways, 50 kw covers a ton of houston a lot of texas also, your probably in a spot where it nulls out or have some serious power lines inteferance.

The earlier site (before their current site) was south of I10 east of Baytown.....4 self supporting towers iirc you could see them at I10 and 146....the current site is just SW of Dayton...Also 4 towers....50KW into an array like that gives you 225 or more effective radiated power (ERP); the same as 250KW into a single 1/4wave tower....But its not the farthest out of town...the FM rimshots are even farther.....(and yes they do have to drive out there if something happens)

I dont know about earlier 740 sites.....could possibly look up info on the FCC data base but they go back only so far.
