Question about the Sangean HD-1

Is there a way I can modify the HD-1 to where I can take out the HD part? I like the tuner, I just don't like the HD kicking in and out all the time. If not I may try to find a old FM analog tuner to use for DX'n.

The Sony XDR-F1HD can be modified and is cheap, there is a link in the thread about it, it's a simple mod, involves cutting one lead and installing a switch.

Try putting an adjustable attenuator on the antenna input, such as http://www.antennasdirect.com/attenuator.html. I have two FM stations where I am right on the fringe of HD; I dial the attenuator back until HD stays unlocked or completely drops off. The more robust analog signal still comes through in clean stereo, along with RDS. For the 15 other stations that always have strong enough HD signal to stay locked, I just leave it on "min."

For an advanced radio (as it has digital tuning) this, by not having a digital/analog switch, is a cheap POS IMHO. 8)

Proof: Most FM tuner/radios have a mono/stereo switch in case the signal is weak and stereo reception is too noisy. Cheap radios omit the switch, but tune out of stereo before you'd want to bump back to mono. I have a Realistic AM stereo tuner and it has a stereo/mono switch.

Bottom line: No switch should lead to no sale. ;)

That is a very common complaint, I've never heard of an HD radio which had an HD-analog switch. Now that could make you think there was a conspiracy. Very simple thing to do at least on the Sony.
